| Galomorro | posted 11-Mar-2002 7:45pm I'll pick "juk" or "jook," Chinese rice porridge that usually has bits of chicken in it. It's kind of a Chinese chicken soup. A serving costs less than a buck at takeout dim sum places here. |

| lion | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 11-Mar-2002 11:31pm it really depends on how good it is. I've had some fabulous cream of tomato soups, and some really lousy ones. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to lion) posted 11-Mar-2002 11:38pm I wish I still had my grandmother's recipe for cream of tomato soup. She made it with her home-canned tomatoes and it was really good. |

| CarolL | posted 12-Mar-2002 9:15am I find a cup of tea very comforting. Potato chips or cheesies will do, as well. Or nachos with salsa, cheese & jalepenos with guacamole and sour cream on the side. I don't really use food for comfort, though. I tend to get lost in TV instead. |
| CarolL | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 12-Mar-2002 9:17am Kate -- I'm always looking for a good meatloaf recipe. Are you willing to share your grandmother's? I know that sharing recipes is sometimes sensitive so I'll understand if you prefer to keep it to yourself |
| Cain | posted 12-Mar-2002 10:42am Chocolate. Although if I'm in the frame of mind where I need comforting, pretty much any food will do. |
| Jemmy | (reply to Matt) posted 12-Mar-2002 11:04am Really? That's weird, otherer replies are coming back to me, I think. Are you are replying to the right address or something? Just in case, it is Jem@moonman.com |

| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to CarolL) posted 12-Mar-2002 1:50pm I don't have my grandmother's handwritten recipe book any longer. It got lost during a move years ago when my friend's drunken boyfriend decided without asking to give us a hand and while we were at the new place, he loaded up his pickup truck with boxes of my books, but did not put up the tailgate and proceeded to drive on the freeway, losing two full boxes of books. Boxes that contained my complete collection of hardbound Chatterbox magazines for children from the early 19th century and some of my cookbooks, including my grandmother's cookbook that she had written in a ledger. I lost a lot of memories and treasures that day. He was drunk enough that he didn't realize he'd lost anything or that the tailgate was down. By the time we found out and retraced his steps, we couldn't find any of the books. I think someone pulled over and picked them up and kept them. |
| Biggles | posted 12-Mar-2002 1:57pm No. I have fads of comfort foods. But I'm trying not to eat for comfort now because I mostly do it when I have PMS and it actually makes the PMS worse. |
| CarolL | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 12-Mar-2002 2:22pm Thanks, kate. Sorry that that happened to you. Stupid booze and boozehounds. If you happen to come across a good meatloaf recipt, I'm always open to new ideas. I like to put in a can of cream of mushroom soup (condensed) instead of eggs, breadcrumbs& spices like garlic & some soya sauce. It comes out with a really nice consistency -- it's not for those who like ketchup in it,really. But it makes great-tasting meatloaf sandwiches after if there's any left over. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to CarolL) posted 12-Mar-2002 2:36pm My grandmother's recipe used oatmeal and eggs. That much I can remember. She also took the handle of a wooden spoon and made a furrow down the middle and just before the meatloaf was done, she'd put ketchup on top and put it back in the oven. She always used this deep round casserole dish that had a matching lid to make her meatloaf in. I inherited it, but it broke long ago. I loved cold meatloaf sandwiches from my grandmother's meatloaf. I always got one the next day in my school lunchbag. |
| Zang | posted 12-Mar-2002 3:01pm I think most people associate "comfort foods" with stuff that their mommy fed them when they were small. My favourite comfort food is something I had for the first time when I was about 23; congee. I like plain congee, I like chicken congee (with salted donut), I like mushroom congee, I like the sweet congee that has beans and barley and gluten in it. I like the mushroom congee the best, it has all different kinds of Chinese mushrooms in it, including those weird little dark brown fungus that look all frilly and are nice and crunchy! |
| Zang | (reply to Galomorro) posted 12-Mar-2002 3:06pm You like it too! |
| Amanda | posted 12-Mar-2002 5:47pm Mashed potatoes are my favorite comfort food. Closely followed by mac-n-cheese. |
| Galomorro | (reply to Zang) posted 12-Mar-2002 10:30pm Ohhhhh -- it is so heavenly. One can get plainish juk at several good dim sum takeout places in Chinatown. My neighbor also makes some good 'uns. |

| confetti | posted 14-Mar-2002 11:41am Pan fries with the skins still on, made in an iron skillet with salt and pepper, then with gobs of ketchup. Pasta with butter and cheese. Bread with butter and jam. CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARBS. |
| natsim | (reply to Dino) posted 14-Mar-2002 4:34pm Well, my dear, I think you should just try it!! |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to natsim) posted 14-Mar-2002 7:43pm I'm not even certain I know what beetroot is. Does it go by another name that I might recognize? |
| natsim | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 15-Mar-2002 1:04am Ahhh... you Americans call beetroot beets. You know, those big purple globes with green leaves on the end. Roast them in the oven brushed with olive oil (or if you're in a hurry, boil them until soft). Cut up, and make a cheese sauce and drench them in it. You can include the leaves! Yum Yum Yum! |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to natsim) posted 15-Mar-2002 1:13am I hate beets! My grandmother used to can beets and make pickled beets and I absolutely HATED them! Thanks for the warning! YUCK YUCK YUCK is more like it in my case! |
| natsim | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 15-Mar-2002 8:06pm But pickled beets taste totally different to roast beets. I hate the pickled ones too!! Be brave.... go on...... |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to natsim) posted 15-Mar-2002 8:38pm I've had beets cooked every conceivable way and guess what? THEY STILL TASTE LIKE BEETS! Thanks, but no thanks. |

| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to natsim) posted 17-Mar-2002 5:16pm My grandmother canned and pickled beets, but she also fixed them other ways, one of them being baked and she also made red flannel hash which is made from left over corned beef (which I also dislike), cooked potatoes and cooked beets. Ugh! |
| natsim | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 17-Mar-2002 7:38pm I love hearing stories about your grandmother; it seems she could do almost anything. She must have have been an amazing woman (even if she cooked something called red flannel hash!). |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to natsim) posted 17-Mar-2002 7:53pm She was pretty amazing in her own way. She was born in 1905 and lived through WWI & WWII, prohibition, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam War until she passed away in 1982. |
| natsim | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 17-Mar-2002 8:26pm I'll bet she had some great stories from her life. She must have seen a lot of change. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to natsim) posted 17-Mar-2002 8:40pm Yes, she did. |
| Steven | posted 17-Mar-2002 11:31pm As a trained professional Chef I can say that most everything I've encountered is quite good. Emotionally I have no need for food to comfort me. I guess it's the old question of whether one eats to live or they live to eat! |
