| Resy | posted 5-Nov-1998 5:15pm My husband has an ICQ account and often tries to explain its use to me. He wants to know if ICQ can get behind the firewall where I work. |
| lisashea | posted 5-Nov-1998 5:15pm I've always refused to use ICQ until now - I didn't want people harassing me at work. Email can be handled when *I* want to read it, but ICQ seemed intrusive. I'm a "community leader" for GeoCities, though, and they're now saying that we have to meet in ICQ instead of in chat rooms for our weekly update meetings. I set myself up with it today, and now I'm intrigued. It appears I can just have a select list of people able to page me, and there are all sorts of "do not disturb" options. It actually seems like a neat little package to be running in a corner in case my mom has to get me or something. What are other people's experiences with this? Pandora: I'm curious, what makes it boring? Wouldn't it be boring if you had boring friends, but really interesting if you had interesting friends? Resy: I have a proxy and it works fine. The only way to know for sure is to try ;) Again, you should be able to lock out everyone else in the world but him quite easily. |
| Ynot | posted 5-Nov-1998 6:43pm I've been using ICQ for almost a year. It's easier to keep running than mirc because of the privacy factor but it still has the lag time and that sort of annoyance that mirc has. |
| Mimi | posted 5-Nov-1998 7:23pm I've found this useful so I can find my son online & have a brief chat with him & sometimes he pops up when I'm working online. |
| steve | posted 5-Nov-1998 9:13pm I don't chat. I've tried it, in a couple of different settings, but it's not for me. |
| Grendel | posted 6-Nov-1998 2:24am ICQ is great for picking up chicks. Just as good as a singles bar. Almost guaranteed to find some to cyber with, and you don't have to worry about them being there the morning after. Only drawback is the sticky keyboard. YEAH BABY! |
| lizzie | posted 6-Nov-1998 8:53am I've heard ICQ mentioned a lot, but I haven't checked it out yet. |
| milktree | posted 6-Nov-1998 10:13am ICQ is a pain for network administrators. |
| bill | posted 6-Nov-1998 12:15pm I just started using again after blowing it off for a few months. I'm not sure it's useful to me. I think email is better - but I'm giving it another try. milktree, why? |
| eris | posted 6-Nov-1998 9:27pm The last version I tried was still pretty broken (on the Mac), but a lot of my friends use it, so I'll probably keep trying it from time to time to see how it shapes up. |
| kirst | posted 7-Nov-1998 7:34am Most of my sixth graders love ICQ. |
| pandora | posted 7-Nov-1998 1:47pm boring, I think. boring survey, that is. |
| seven | posted 7-Nov-1998 8:34pm Our firewall thwarts me |
| jefff | posted 8-Nov-1998 1:11pm I think ICQ sucks. Lots of buggy/incompatible apps out there. Firewalls cause all sorts of problems. Often there is enough of a delay to make it really frustrating to use. Either simple email or a phone call are almost always preferable, in my experience. |

| tchite | posted 21-Nov-1998 11:12pm I have removed ICQ from my computer several times after my sons put it there. It has a vicious memory leak that destroys the responsiveness of a number of machines I've seen it on. |
| miykal | posted 28-Nov-1998 6:15am Its great. |
| Rainedazze | posted 3-Jan-1999 7:52pm I have used ICQ for over a year now. I think that it is one of the coolest programs out..allowing me to keep up with my online friends that dont have the same ISP. |
| they | posted 6-Jan-1999 10:55am It's on magbast's computer... I like it okay... it's a good way to get in touch with people. |
| bill | posted 7-Jan-1999 9:05am I recently stopped using it again. |
| North79 | posted 9-Mar-1999 1:24pm My ICQ number only has five digits...aren't they up to 30 million now or something? |
| they | posted 9-Mar-1999 5:52pm North79, mine has 7 digits. |
| mandy | posted 13-Apr-1999 3:49pm We downloaded ICQ when we had the Performa...the only version available for Mac was beta....It sucked...I haven't tried it on the iMac yet...I might...I am pretty satisfied with AOL Instant messenger(We are not on AOL)...It works the same way...and a lot of my friends have it too. |
