I have been a patient in the emergency room several times. I had to get stitches in one eyebrow when I was two years old. I fell on the heat register at my grandma's house. I had to get stitches in my other eyebrow when I was ten. I jumped off my grandma's steps, and tripped and fell into the hall mirror. I broke my ankle when I was fourteen-we were playing outside at my grandma's house, and I fell in a hole, where our tetherball used to be. I was hospitalized twice for kidney stones. I went to the emergency room once for a bad ear infection. It was on Easter Sunday, so of course, no doctor's office was open. I went to the emergency room last summer with shortness of breath, and what turned out to be a stroke and congestive heart failure. I have been to the emergency room when other members of my family were hurt or sick, too. My sister stoved her thumb once, broke her ankle, and had a gall bladder attack. My dad broke his arm. My mom broke her ankle, and had kidney stones. She also thought she was having a stroke once, but it turned out to be some kind of infection. And she had open heart surgery (quintuple bypass).

Thanks. It was pretty scary. But I'm getting around pretty well now, and my typing speed is getting better. Maybe it is kind of a good thing that I could see what it was like not to have good control over her your limbs, because now I can better appreciate things I took for granted before. Like last week, my mom and I went to the mall. I decided to take the escalator instead of the elevator, and was so happy that I was able to do it. I said "Look, Mom. I can still do this". Sometimes, it seemed like I would never get back to "normal". Now, I'm almost there.

Yes, a few times.

Once when I stepped on a glass drinking tumbler which I had placed on the floor by the couch, and it exploded under me slicing my arch right in half crosswise, through layers of muscle. That was nasty.

Once when I was really sick during a summer heat wave (no AC) with diarrhea and high fever for 3 days, and on the fourth day I hadn't eaten or drunk anything for 24 hours, and suddenly the heat overcame me and I jumped up and started staggering about the house in a panic, panting and crying and about to faint from the heat. My fever was 104 and by the time I got to the ER I was shivering and incoherent.

Once after I fell down the outside steps and landed on my back really hard, with the edge of a step hitting the base of my neck, my middle back, and my lower back. My friend was with me when it happened and insisted I go in. Oddly enough, the experience seemed to have realigned my neck for the better.

I learned a lot from having broken my left ankle a few years ago. It's amazing how much I took mobility for granted and how frustrating and difficult it was not to be able to get around. I'm glad you're recovering so well! * smile *

Yes - but it's called Casualty or Accidents-and-Emergencies (A&E) in this country * smile * Once when I had osteomylitis (sp?) as a baby, once when I broke my arm and once when my GP referred me because my brain was going super nova and there was a chance I'd had a stroke or had a brain tumour. Jolly days!

I took a friend to the walk-in-centre at the hospital next to my school when she broke her finger. But that isn't a proper A&E. Only the Children's Hospital and the Northern General in Sheffield have A&E departments. The Hallamshire mostly deals with long-term complaints although you can be admitted as an emergency (one of my friends was admitted on Thursday with Appendicitis. It was her 18th birthday on Friday * frown * ).

Yes just last week. I've went a few times. I cut the tip of my finger off, I got hit in the face with a bumper jack, I had a large rock dropped on my head, I ran my hand through a bicycle chain, and just last week I collapsed outside a restaurant and eventually blacked out. Is that enough?

lol Well, actually, I went to Grandma's every day, because both my parents worked full time. By the time I was old enough to stay home alone, all of my best friends lived in that neighborhood, so I continued to go to Grandma's every weekday until I was about 17. So, that's why most of my childhood injuries happened at Grandma's house.

I have been to the ER so many times I've lost count.
My mom used to work at the hospital where we lived so if we had any problems she took us their instead of a dr. office.
I had many ear infections as a child.
I broke my fingers on about 6 different occassions. (tetherball and such)
I broke my ankle when I was 12.
Anytime we got the flu or strept throat and stuff like that she took us to the ER.
Since adulthood, I've sliced two of my fingers open and went to the ER.
I could go on...

When I was 17, just out of High School, still living with Mum and "dating" my husband, we went roller skating and I didn't feel very well. I went to the ladies room to pee and it was bloody. He took me to the ER and my Mum met us there. It was a bladder infection. I was newly sexually active and was told by the DR. that can sometimes irritate things, especially if we were doing it very frequently. Of course he said all this in front of Mum.

As we were driving home, my mother said..."You better tell him to wash his hands before."
That struck me as really funny! * raspberry *

I also fell and broke my ankle while shopping.
I once thought I had Toxic Shock Syndrome.I didn't...just the flu.

I've been to the emergency room quite a few times. First time I remember is when I was 5 and I broke my arm. Since then I've been there for several reasons. I went because I was in terrible pain that ended up being kidney stones. I went twice when I was involved in car accidents. First time, I was treated and released, second time I was admitted because of internal bleeding and had surgery. When I was in labor, I went in through the emergency room, as it was 3:00am. I've been for other things, but it would take me days to list them all. LOL

I hit my head on the radiator when I was five! I was actually trying to smack my brother in the stomach with my head, but he moved. * wry smile * My parents were having dinner out at a restaurant, so our neighbors took me to the hospital and I got 3 stitches. That was quite an adventure!

My doctor thinks it was a combination of not enough sleep, too much work and stress and not eating right. He is running more tests. I am getting an MRI on my brain. They have already run an EKG, numerous blood tests and a chest x-ray. It was really scary. I thought I was dying. It scared ASB to death. I've been fine since then. My doctor also believes I have a bad case of sleep apnea. I will be going to a sleep center too. I think with a few adjustments I will be fine. Thanks for asking. I'll report back after I am done being poked and prodded. * smile *

My dad had sleep apnea, but this was before doctors knew much about it or the problems it causes. Good luck at the sleep center. BTW-are you a snorer? The reason I ask is that it's not too uncommon for people who snore heavily to also have sleep apnea. At least it's better than having narolepsy like a former neighbor of mine had, she'd fall asleep while talking to you. Again, GOOD LUCK!

Yeah, I was quite the klutz. The wors thing about it was, my one aun is only two years older than I am, and since I spent so much time at my grandparents' house, we often played together. Pam could always do cartwheels, tricks on the skateboard, etc. Most of my childhood injuries were from trying to do what Pam did. Once, my grandma said, "If Pam carried a bucket of crap on her head, would yo want one, too?" I said "Of course."

I don't remember the time I fell on the radiator, but the time I fell into the mirror was definitely an adventure I won't forget. My aunt Pam is only two years older than me, but she was always a good athlete, and could do back flips, jumps on her bike, etc. She jumped off the landing of the steps (about 12 steps up), so I had to try to do it, too. I landed on the hall mirror, and got a gash in my eyebrow. BTW, you shouldn't have been picking on your brother. Naughty Susan. Go sit in the corner, and think about what you did. When you're ready to be civil, you can come out. * wink *

((HUG)) About three months after my third attempt my uncle committed suicide. I realised then the act itself is more destroying for the families left behind. Plus, I thought - what a waste. I loved that guy! I figured I guess someone loves me too and I didn't want to put my Mum through all that crap. I would like to say I went on and dealt with my problems - tragically life got worse - but happily I'm fine now. Not quite so melodramatic and quick to act on impulse.

I was frequently trying to imitate my younger sister who was far more athletic than I was. I hurt my back by trying to skateboard down the driveway and turn onto the short sidewalk that ran in front of our home. I was fine until and tried to make the turn onto the sidewalk and fell flat on my back on the cement sidewalk. I can't recall exactly what the doctor said I did, but I ended up in the hospital in traction for awhile (I think it might have been a cervical injury) where I had to wear this device on my head attached to weights. When they let me go home, I had to do this several times a day. Strap on the head device, the weights went over the top of the door somehow and I had to set there for a certain amount of time. Thank God for books. or I would have gone crazy.

My grandma said the one about jumping off the bridge, too. That back injury from skateboarding sounds like it must have really hurt. My aunt tried to teach me to stand on my elbows (do a handstand but with your arms from the elbows down flat on the ground). I somehow flipped all the way over, and landed flat on my back on the rock we were using as a guide. I wasn't really injured, but it hurt like hell.

Don't feel too bad. I hurt my sister at least 2 times during our childhood, both times ending in visits to a doctor. When I was about 5 I hit my sister on the head with a clam-digging shovel because she threw all my new dolls in the old cess-pool where we lived. Her dolls were usually destroyed by her within a week of getting them and I didn't want to let her ruin mine as well and my grandmother backed me up on this. My sister needed 17 stitches across her head and I ended up with a very warm behind. The other time happened about when I was 8 and she was 7. We lived in a different house and she threw my doll's buggy into some oil in the driveway after I wouldn't let her play with it (she had broken her's). I went to kick her in the knee (I was wearing saddle oxfords) and she put her hand down and got kicked on the hand between the thumb and first finger and received a hairline fracture. I wasn't punished for that one because I hadn't intended to kick her in the hand. I had a bad temper as a child (maybe it was the red hair).
