Hey jody, shouldn't this be under "food" and not "personal habits"?

Depends on what I want to do with it. If it is to bake a pie then I pick granny smith, if to just each then red delicious. I don't really care for macintosh.

I really like macouns! The apples I don't like are red delicious - they always wind up mushy and mealy for some reason. Cortlands and macs make good applesauce.
*milktree - yup - thanks!

Toss up between Fuji or Gala for my favorite. My least favorites are Golden Delicious and Granny Smith.

umm, "green". I'm not too into needing to know its generaology, just that it is the kind that is supposed to be green & it isn't covered in pesticide. after that, i don't care.

Gala, followed by Cortland and Fuji. I usually don't like ranking surveys but this would have made a good one.

For general eating I like golden delicious. I also like the really tart ones, like granny smith. recently i went up to Vermont and got a bunch of apples, and the Empires were good. I HATE red delicious. They are flavorless and squishy. yuckola. BTW, does anyone know of a decent apple information web site? Something listing apple types and a general description of their taste and best use? I've been having a tough time finding one.

I only like apples in pie.

Varies by application, of course. I wouldn't make pie with the same apples I prefer to eat plain, or cook up into something.

I love any green apple (that is naturally green when it is ripe)

There are some apples that I like but I never remember the name. But if I'm eating something else I know.

I hate Red Delicious. They're nothing but sweet. I've recently been pointed at one called Ginger Gold; they're not as good as Granny Smith (not as crunchy) but they've got a nice, tart, interesting flavor. I bet they'd be great in a cake.

Red. We were in fact out at Goodale Orchards on Saturday (apple picking season was over) to try their fruit wines for an article on such. They had "Jastaberry Wine" - gooseberry and black currant mix.

I never knew from Cortland until topper had me try one. they're yummy. I generally don't much like red or golden delicious, but the ones from my own trees are great.

*** phi - funny - we like the same apples :)

I'm no expert about which is which - I like to try different kinds, I like variety.

Sweet is bad; mushy is worse.

I generally use granny apples in pies (when I bake them), so I guess that is my preference..

Granny Smith are my all time favorite, they are so tart and wonderful. They are especially good with peanut butter. Fuji rank a high 2nd.

Granny Smiths and Fujis for me - I vastly prefer apples that have a good level of tartness to cut the sweet, and a nice crisp texture. Can't abide delicious-types, I find them sickly-sweet.

I tried a fuji the other day and it was awful -- incredibly sour and without any apply flavor. Having never had one before, I don't know if I just don't like them or that particular apple was just bad...but at that price I'm not buying one again!
