i once saw a t-shirt that said "art is whatever you can get away with. i'm not sure i agree with that, but i'm not sure i disagree either. and i'm not sure what my definition of art is, which is a little pathetic given that i'm an artist and i help run an art gallery. *dead face*

Art is something of aesthetic beauty created by humans. I include architecture in art. Even skyscrapers such as the WTC were beautiful to me because they were perfectly vertical, immense and people were drawn to look at them. Art does not include painting in human crap or farting paint onto a canvass. People used to be locked up for playing with their own crap, these days the neo-bourgeoise pay to see the results of a madman's anal obsessive episode. I see art in many things. A printed circuit board for instance. I don't always see art in things that are supposed to be art. A $250,000 piece of scrap metal outside a bank headquarters is not what I consider to be art. Rembrandt is an artist. Paintings that need to be explained to me are not art.

if i was a bettin' woman i'd guess that you don't like school and don't get the best of marks for you are bored and "distracted". i'd also bet that you don't fit the "norm" of the rest of your class.
i'd bet that you're a thinker....an artist.
i didn't like school because i was bored. i didn't like a majority of the kids either, even though i knew all of them kindnergarden on. although, i did get along with everyone.
i would like to think of myself at that time as an artist.

well, anyhow....i just think that you've matured quicker than most kids your age.(sorry to call you a kid, cause i don't think of you as a kid, it's just by "definition" of your age. eech! don't like those "definitions"!!!!)

very cool

i really like the metal too, but i only worked with it on one occasion. i really enjoyed the whole process though. it taught me that there is a process to things like that. that you just can't sit down w/ something and have it be what you imagined in a minute.
i'm relearning the whole process, for i have stepped away from art for a while and whenever i would return, i would get frustrated. so i'm teaching myself again w/ h20 colors. would like to do something else though.

anyhow, good luck w/ your jewelry!

i agree. BUT...does the law or morality intertwine w/ that definition?

let's just say, for example, that i kill people and make lampshades from their skin. i call it art. but is it?
or what if i posed nude children in provacative positions and photographed them. i call it art. but is it?

these would get a HUGE emotional reaction.....i personally don't think that those examples are art though.
what do you think?

like i said to jemmy, i'm not looking to start an argument at all. all i wanted to do was to throw something else at you that realates to your statement.
i agree with you original statement.
that murder, and child porn were just examples of something that could be considered art,(by sickos i think), but i wanted to lead you to look at your statement and then to look at it again. i'm not saying that there is a right or wrong answer here. i just wanted to see if you had any other thoughts on the subject of what is considered art. that's all.

I think art is in the eye of the beholder. Art is as art does. The word "art" is derived from the Latin "ars" which means "skill". Taking that tact, I'd say that art is skill applied in a creative fashion.

It's a rather general concept.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zang
(reply to justjulie) posted 6-Feb-2002 8:47pm

Yes there should be a blushing emoticon, I would have used it plenty by now.

I came up with that years ago. Of course it is a circular definition. People will inevitably ask: "So what is an artist?" To which I reply: "An artist is someone who creates art." A bit silly, but as far as I'm concerned, it is the best definition. *grin*

My art right now is primarily composing music. You can download MP3s of it from this site:

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/99/white_geezer.html

I do a little rudimentary computer graphics too. All the stuff on that page is mine. I used to paint, but it has been a long time. I did a lot of performance art back in the 80s. I've been wanting to get back into that again...so far nothing.
justjulie
(reply to Zang) posted 7-Feb-2002 8:13am

cool! thanks!

i do like your circular definition, it reminds me of the one an old art teacher of mine said, "Clay is earth....and earth is clay". Loved that woman.

i like those little graphics on your page, pretty cool stuff.

yeah, i'm trying to figure out which artsy fartsy avenue to take. painting? sculpting? drawing? collage work? crafty martha stewart type stuff? sheesh...i dunno. i've been searching for a "sign" as to which road to take. difficult, for they all give me joy, but which one gives me the most joy? sigh....really don't have much time to do stuff like that right now anyhow.

anyhow...thanks again for the link "white geezer"!
