Some explanation would be nice. I've never even heard of it.

Sorry, about that. They have made such a big fuss in our area about it (Texas) that I thought everyone had heard the same hype we had. It would have been humorous if it wasn't nearly a disaster, but they did try the broadcast in the Dallas-Fort Worth area & somehow it interfered with hospital equipment & had to be discontinued immediately. They are now working on taking care of those unexpected problems.

Do we really need high definition of Ken Starr telling us that the President diddled some intern?

Hmmmm, there don't seem to be many "positive" check boxes in here. We have a new Sony 36" that's "better quality than normal TV broadcast", and a DVD player so we get "better than normal" TV viewing. Which is funny since we never watch TV, but it's great for Amadeus and other movies with excellent sound and video quality. I think it's about time TV caught up with other technologies and gave us really high quality sound and video. It sucks watching a fantastically made movie like Amadeus on a horrible quality (and worse sounding) normal VCR.

For you people that somehow missed HDTV, this is the High Definition TV that is the "new standard" for TV broadcast. It's an entirely different, higher quality, format. They started broadcasting it for a few shows now, and by 2004 I think all broadcasts will be converted - i.e. you either need a new TV set or you need a converter box for your existing TV (tho if you convert, it still looks as awful as a normal TV does since the TV isn't physically capable of displaying the better video). It's already in place in Japan and I'm not sure what other countries. It gives an extremely high quality video and audio signal - far better than "normal TVs" can show.

jjg: That's why I don't watch broadcast TV ;)

I think the entertainment industry should focus more on content and less on technology. High Definition garbage is still garbage...

I don't have time to watch regular TV, so I'm not interested in HDTV.

I only know what HDTV is by inference from the questions.

Eris: maybe the high definition will enable people to *see* that it is garbage.

I haven't seen it yet but from what I've read I'm disappointed both with the complexity and the resolution. I heard they were shooting for 35mm film resolution which is supposed to be around 4000x3000 but the highest res picture is only around 1000 lines. And 18 different frame formats? Give me a break.

Apparently the broadcasters are all excited though because they can send four SDTV digital signals through one HDTV channel.

I have NO idea what you're talking about. I'm going to read the comments and hope for a brief education. Thanks lisashea.

Maybe if I watched a lot of tv, I might be interested. That being said, I don't watch enough tv to justify the expense.
