| daver | posted 8-Oct-1998 11:12am Neither. I use catercorner. But, since that's not an option, I just skewed your numbers. **jjg: No, it's an english thing...you know, your native language. |
| doom | posted 8-Oct-1998 11:53am I really don't use either but kitty-corner is what I have heard used more often. macquivr, 'beth?' |
| anonymous | posted 8-Oct-1998 12:54pm Taken from the mirriam-webster dictionary:catercorner adv. or adj. in a diagonal or oblique position : on a diagonal or oblique line |

| Mimi | posted 8-Oct-1998 1:17pm I've always used catercorner, but have heard of kittycorner. |
| lion | posted 8-Oct-1998 9:13pm I've always known it as catty-corner. |
| jjg | posted 9-Oct-1998 10:57am Kitty-corner. I've never actually heard someone say catty-corner before. Or for that matter catercorner. (Is that some sort of Scottish thing?) ***Daver: no that's my ancestral language. I speak American-English, saying pip-pip and cheerio would just get me beaten up. |
| reality | posted 9-Oct-1998 11:32am *jjg: can we beat you up anyways? I agree, there is a distinct difference between English and American |
| lelle | posted 10-Oct-1998 10:07pm Neither. |
| jzp | posted 11-Oct-1998 9:31am variant for "catercorner"? neat- i thought they were all some made up alternate for diagonal. learn something new and all that. |
| jefff | posted 11-Oct-1998 1:04pm Well, guys, "catercornered" is standard American english too - jjg, are you thinking of "cateran" - that's what Scots call a highwayman - isn't there a line with that word in a Blues traveller song? Or maybe it's a Jethro Tull song... |
| eris | posted 12-Oct-1998 3:43pm I am inconsistent and don't always use the same one. |
| steve | posted 13-Oct-1998 6:20pm Diagonal. |
| drdt | posted 13-Oct-1998 7:24pm Didn't this kind of language die out in the fifties? I want a third option. (regardless, I agree w/ jzp its a neat education.) |

| anonymous | posted 15-Oct-1998 6:43pm lisashea: maybe bill will make one for her, like he made the smiley face translations just for you. |
| lisashea | posted 15-Oct-1998 6:48pm Pandora: Do you have a macro for that? If so, can you make it lower case? :) Anon: Actually I don't like the smiley pictures! I was one of the first to complain, but Bill likes them, so they stay. |
| bill | posted 15-Oct-1998 10:39pm catercorner? I'd only heard kittycorner before. * I did add the smilies purely for my on gratification and pleasure. I hadn't realized just how often lisashea puts smileys in her comments until after I did it though... then I was really please with myself. I'm still shocked to hear that some (most?) of you don't like them. Perhaps YOU ARE ALL A BUNCH OF CONDESCENDING butt-holeS! |
| Resy | posted 5-Nov-1998 8:23pm ah, that would be : diagonal |
