Do you think it's a coincidence that the words 'fashion' and 'fascist' sound a lot alike?

yes

'fashion' is derived from the French word 'facion' (shape) and earlier, the Latin 'faction', which means making

'fascist' is derived from the Italian 'fascio' which means group or bundle, and earlier formthe Latin 'fascis'

it's a coincidence.

Oh, Cliff

Sometimes it must be difficult not to feel as if

You really are a Cliff

When fascists keep trying to push you over it

Are they the lemmings?

Or are you Cliff?

Or are you, Cliff?

I think it's coincidence - they both have Latin roots but in different words. "Fashion" comes from "facere" (to make) and "fascist" comes from "fascis" (bundle) via the Italian "fascio" (political group).

Interesting point though.

Nah!!!! Word association...
FASHION PASSION

FASCIST BAPTIST

They are of entirely different worlds. (Casts longing eyes at the unread February "Glamour" near her bed. Must study first).

Cute observation and quite fitting but no, I'm afraid its just a coincidence.

Mostly coincidence. Both words are derived from Latin. However, "fashion" comes from the word for "make", and "Fascist" comes from the word for "bundle". The Italian Fascist Party under Mussolini used the symbol of an axe bundled up with some sticks. I believe this symbol had some historical precedent, and is intended to demonstrate strength in numbers.

Good point! Also Latin, but with no connection to either of the other two...

It's a coincidence of course. Sheesh. Why would there be a connection?

And have you ever noticed that "therapist" also spells "the rapist"? Mary Daly sure has.

Actually, I can easily see how "fascis" (bundle) could have been made from "facere" (make) to mean "something MADE from a group of objects to form a bundle" even in some pre-Latin language and then migrate to Latin. So after all, they could be connected.

Even if they both begin with "fash" it's not very fashionable to be a fascist is it? I don't get your idea here. Do you know anything about languages?

But always around.
Pollution, are you coming to my town?
Or am I coming to yours?
We're on different buses, pollution
But we're both using petrol...

I'm sorry, it wasn't intended to be an insult and I didn't know who the survey creator was. I just sometimes act a little impolitely. I didn't mean to question your knowledge of languages either.

if they were spelled the same, I'd be worried, but the fash sound is spelled differently in each of them.

Of course it's a coincidence. One comes from the Latin "facto", or fact, the other from the Latin "fasces", or bundle.
