| anonymous | posted 27-Sep-1998 1:44pm http://www.stpt.com (Starting Point) -- It's a great place to go to start looking for most any resource, from news to shopping. |
| Pomeranian | posted 27-Sep-1998 6:54pm http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/ ... its basically a entertainment gossip site, but with a a geeky edge and a pretty extensive network of spies....I can not go on the Web and not go there |
| Mimi | posted 27-Sep-1998 7:08pm By 'my library,' I mean the public library where I work. What I really need is cool sites that aren't obscene. Anything you think is great, might be something the people who look at our site would like to see, also. I like the ones so far & as many years as I have been on the Internet & as much time as I spend on it at home & work, so far you have found some I never knew about. And it certainly is not important that they be 'literary' sites. |
| zaruba | posted 27-Sep-1998 7:20pm I keep my stock portfolio on line so that's the first thing I check. This is a good place to start to check on the market: http://quote.yahoo.com/?u Then when I really need great research help on stocks, I go to: http://www.sjgames.com/svtarot/ to see what's in the cards. |

| lisashea | posted 28-Sep-1998 8:24am I have a webcrawler "Lisa's News" page that I've customized with news I'm interested in. I also check my personal pages - wine.miningco.com, my various homepages - to make sure they're still up and consider what I want to add to them next. After those I'll cycle through boston.com and telegram.com for local news. |
| doom | posted 28-Sep-1998 9:37am Dilbert and cnn. |
| lizzie | posted 28-Sep-1998 10:24am I visit the Dilbert web site ( http://www.unitedmedia.com/comics/dilbert ) so that I can read today's Dilbert cartoon. That and Survey Central are the first 2 I visit in the mornings at work. |
| Jody | posted 28-Sep-1998 10:29am quote.yahoo.com provides stock quotes - that's the first site I open. I check to see how my company is doing.Other sides I use regularly when I need info include people.yahoo.com, which lets you find people and their email addresses. www.potter.net/mediasite/newspaper.html provides access to newspapers in the US and canada. www.facade.com provides biorhythms, tarot and rune readings, and the like. www.mapquest.com can provide directions and maps. www.monster.com takes you to the monster board for job information. www.hilink.com.au/times tells you what time it is anywhere in the world (if you want to call someone on another continent it's helpful to know what the current time difference is). |
| milktree | posted 28-Sep-1998 10:40am www.etrade.com. I like to see how much money I've lost. |
| reality | posted 28-Sep-1998 12:21pm www.davesclassics.com, it is my source for MAME news. (make sure you have all the s's, otherwise you get to a porn site. *grumble*) |
| jjg | posted 28-Sep-1998 1:00pm Yahoo is listed as the homepage when I first boot my browser. That's about it. I don't do much with the internet on a regular basis. |
| steve | posted 28-Sep-1998 4:00pm The only other sites that I visit with any regularity are the This Modern World homepage, because Tom Tomorrow is a genius, and Slate, which I subscribe to in order to get Today's Papers, a fairly good overview of what the major US dailies are leading with and how they're playing various major stories. |
| phi | posted 28-Sep-1998 4:05pm News sites: Boston Globe and CNN; occasionally New York Times and there are enough others to put any library's paper newspaper collection to shame. Fun sites: sixdegrees, ebay, mapquest or similar (there are lots of these), occasionally random other sites which I usually find using a search engine (another thing to have a good list of). |
| Kari | posted 28-Sep-1998 5:33pm First I check out my e-mail, then I usually go to the ABC site to see what is happening with the soaps. I also really like Majority Rules and Quizland. |
| jer | posted 28-Sep-1998 7:32pm davesclassics.com for Emulated computers and games slashdot.org for geeky news |

| cpierson | posted 29-Sep-1998 3:41pm I usually check the currency rates on Yahoo: as a Canuck living abroad, I've been watching the slide of the loonie with a certain sick fascination. Fortunately, the thing's starting to recover now. My morning ritual also includes the Toronto Star online, theforce.net, Ain't It Cool News and Mr. Showbiz. |
| eris | posted 29-Sep-1998 6:42pm Thanks for the context... I visit most sites less frequently than this one, but my top site for "general consumption" would be the recent earthquakes site run by the USGS: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/index.html I think because of the way you asked the question, the answers are (mine certainly is) biased towards sites that have dynamic content that changes from day to day or hour to hour. |
| elijahblue | posted 29-Sep-1998 8:10pm My online email is usually the first thing I check. Recently, I have been quite into exploring y0ni, a feminist site. Here are some other favorite sites. What do you mean by your library? Do you want links to literary stuff? Here's a database of poetry. I usually use this search engine to find stuff. jen: those are beautiful kittens :) |
