| serendipity | posted 1-Jan-2002 4:56pm Yeah, I know this. It happened once while I was on a bike, with three lights in succession. I almost tumbled in a ditch. And stranger things have happened to me. |
| juliw | posted 1-Jan-2002 5:30pm (shrugs) Been a while since I looked at a streetlight |
| heyzeus1 | posted 1-Jan-2002 6:37pm that has always happened so i just dont pay attention anymore. |
| jkiehart | posted 1-Jan-2002 7:44pm LOL Yes! Quite often! |
| jettles | posted 1-Jan-2002 8:45pm yes, actually there is a street light at the end of my drive way and it frequently goes out when i walk to the end of the drive or get out of my car at the end of the drive. i don't know what it does when i am not around so,?? maybe it just goes out frequently in general or maybe it is just me!! |
| Oscar | posted 1-Jan-2002 10:50pm What is up with that? I thought it was just me. |
| Cleo | posted 1-Jan-2002 10:51pm Where do you live that your street light does that? Whait a minute,I just talked to my two teenagers. My daughter said that would happen to her while shes jogging towards it.But then on the other hand my son said, that never happens to him. Could i tbe something in ones body htat does that? Hummm that's food for thought! |
| Dino | posted 2-Jan-2002 3:31am no, but now you've got me paranoid. I shall be on the look out. (I'll be the weird looking guy craning his neck at each light he passes) |
| Zang | posted 2-Jan-2002 8:42am I have a friend who claims to have the ability to do this at will. He is also an enormous flake however, so I would take that with a grain of salt. There are a number of reasons why street lamps would do this. |
| Biggles | posted 2-Jan-2002 8:51am As far as I'm aware that's never happened to me. But I don't walk past many streetlights. I'm a country lass I can't say it's a wholly unexpected phenomenon. |
| Zang | (reply to anonymous) posted 2-Jan-2002 9:05am I take it that this was influential in this survey? http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a4_047.html I kind of favour the "van is always at the corner" theory. |
| chico | posted 2-Jan-2002 9:52am It never happened to me with streetlights, but it does occasionally happen with the lights and lamps at home. |
| confetti | posted 2-Jan-2002 12:30pm No. You know why? The streetlights here in Costa Rica are on all the time. You've got it. 24/7. They never go out. What really gets to me here is when the electricity goes off, but not all of a sudden: when you can see the light from the lamps and crap slowly fading, but it takes them like a whole minute. Eeeeeeee that's creepy. Another horrid thing that happens to me sometimes is when lights suddenly go on that've been off. |
| kaleb777 | (reply to Zang) posted 2-Jan-2002 12:49pm Yes, I did see that article. It was interesting. I have often thought whether streetlights do this all the time and it's only noticed when people approach one as it's actually happening. I did read a chapter in a book about unexplained SLD (street light disturbances) where witnesses claimed to have seen a man who was searched by police to find out what he was doing to turn off the streetlights continue to walk down the street turning off every light as he approached it. The lights would re-light as he passed. I've noticed this happens usually when I am between thoughts. It never happens if I'm thinking hard about something at the time. |
| Jemmy | posted 2-Jan-2002 3:20pm Nope. I never heard of this happening before now. |
| Cleo | (reply to Dino) posted 2-Jan-2002 3:39pm lol lol lol |
| Cleo | (reply to Biggles) posted 2-Jan-2002 3:50pm Wow!! It sounds scary where you live.& by that big UNLIT field.Oooooooo be crefull!!! It sounds kinda dangerous to me.Please be carefull. |
| Cleo | (reply to jettles) posted 2-Jan-2002 4:04pm Do you suppose that,it could be a control device in the pavement, that triggers it,to react that way?You know, like the stop lights for the cars?? It sounds so weird to me. |
| HareKrishna | posted 2-Jan-2002 5:28pm When I see a street light that doesn't work I ring Energy Australia http://www.energy.com.au/ on 1800044808 & they fix it within 5 working days. Krishna's mercy! |
| jettles | (reply to Cleo) posted 2-Jan-2002 8:57pm it is weird........ i don't know what does it but it comes right back on, say, 2-3 minutes later...?? |
| Kay | posted 2-Jan-2002 10:09pm YES!! I thought it was just me and I was going crazy! |
| Cleo | (reply to jettles) posted 2-Jan-2002 10:56pm That IS weird!!! I feel like trying it now. |
| Biggles | (reply to Cleo) posted 3-Jan-2002 6:25am It's not *that* big I wonder if I can find any pictures....... |
| cpierson | posted 3-Jan-2002 9:39am There was one in particular at university that would die every single time I walked by it. I even watched it from a distance to see if it did it for other people, and it didn't. It was clearly out to get me. |
| Pooh_Bear | posted 3-Jan-2002 11:08am I always figured they were on a motion sensor...but they they would go ON instead of OFF when I walked by...Hmmmm.... |
| anonymous | posted 3-Jan-2002 4:37pm slap my ass cheeks and call me sally...,, |
| Wookiewoman | posted 3-Jan-2002 5:28pm It has never happened to me although there have been many times when the light will go out as I pass it but not come back on. |
| jettles | (reply to Cleo) posted 3-Jan-2002 10:06pm lol, come on over... |
| cuteasabutton | posted 4-Jan-2002 2:46pm Yes! There is this one light real close to my house that does that- I thought I was bonkers and just imagining it. Boy, am I relieved. |
| Wendy | posted 5-Jan-2002 1:08am Yes, it happened to me once when my boyfriend and I were driving underneath one. Just as we approached, it went out. I looked back, and as soon as we drove away, it came back on. I watched to see if it was just blinking, but it stayed on until I was blocks away, and couldn't see it anymore (yes, I watched the whole time! |
| skylark | posted 5-Jan-2002 1:53pm I have a strange feeling... nah, I can't remember. It's rather usual for a street light to blink when it's nearly dead. I don't think it's very paranormal. |
| Cleo | (reply to Biggles) posted 5-Jan-2002 11:15pm Take pictures I want to see!!! Humm,I feel like taking pictures of my home & it's surrounding areas now, too. The post cards that I sent you, were of the metropolis(s) of those areas.I don't live in the BIG city.More like a wanna be big city. |
| Cleo | (reply to jettles) posted 5-Jan-2002 11:20pm No,no....I ment in my own neighborhood. **looks at the balance in my check book** When I save up enough $$ I'll check out the lamp post light phenomenon in your area. |
| bill | posted 6-Jan-2002 8:07am If this happens to you, you're a witch. I once read a book about witchcraft and they said that if you look at someone and the immediately turn to look right back at you, you're a witch. |
| bill | posted 6-Jan-2002 8:09am A bulb in a livingroom sconce flashed and burned out while I was sitting in the room reading. I'd been there about an hour and remained there for at least an hour more after that. ...so, I don't think that makes me a witch. |
| Biggles | (reply to Cleo) posted 6-Jan-2002 11:18am I'll find some pictures to put in when I send you some goodies |
| Biggles | (reply to bill) posted 6-Jan-2002 11:20am A bulb in our living room went out the other day. It was only spooky because it was my dad's birthday and we were sat at the table having a birthday meal. The bulb went out over his head as we were wishing him a good year |
| bill | (reply to Biggles) posted 6-Jan-2002 1:20pm he's a witch! |
| davethebrave371 | posted 6-Jan-2002 2:43pm This happens to me ALL the time, and to my girlfriend, Sandra, even more! Several times we have been approaching a light, and she just says, "Watch." and it goes out, or turns on if it was off. |
| Biggles | (reply to bill) posted 6-Jan-2002 4:00pm My dad's a witch??! Goodness me! We thought it referred to his life being snuffed out later this year......... |
| Cleo | (reply to Biggles) posted 6-Jan-2002 5:22pm Yay!!! |
