Which would you save, a random stranger, or the only copy of the complete works of William Shakespeare?

In the beginning of "Bullets Over Broadway" (a play), this question is asked: If there were a fire in a building, and you had only the time to go in and save one of the following, which would you save:
A random stranger, or the last remaining copy of Shakespeare's plays (and other works)?

VotesAnswer
11The Plays.
39A random stranger.
1Neither.
5I don't know for sure.
1I have something else to say about burning buildings, Shakespeare, and random strangers.

Personally, I'd gain more from saving the stranger... on the other hand... if I could somehow do it anonymously... I'd save the plays.

I loathe Shakespeare.
The stranger.
I loathe plays and Broadway and bullets too.
The book isn't going too well right now, either..

The randow stranger. The works of Shakespeare are worthless without people to read them. Besides, between the entire world population, I'm sure we could remember enough Shakespeare to put together a new copy.

The stranger. Human life is more valuable than any written work, no matter how valuable that is.(And I do believe that Shakespeare's works are valuable-I love them all!)

The stranger.
My legions of monkeeeeees and their typewriters could reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare...no problemo!

By saying the stranger, does not mean I don't appreciate Shakespeare's work, because I do.

The stranger. If there was only one copy of Shakespeare left in the whole world, it wouldn't be very appreciated if I saved it anyway.

A random stranger...a person's life is much more important than words written on a piece of paper.

That's a person we're talking about! Unless of course the random stranger just shot me in the arm...

screw the literature. Save the life. I can't believe there are people who would contemplate this.

I think it's pretty unlikely that there'd be only one remaining copy of Shakespeare's plays. In any case, a human life is more important. Regardless of the human.
