  Is other always necessary?

Sometimes a survey creator is told by other survey creators that he/she needs to add an other option to his/her survey, even if it is a straight yes or no answer.

Some people think in Black & White. Whilst others think in Grey. Therefore using 'other' should be standard.
Although people selecting 'other' should, out of politeness explain their selection.

Where's the option for Other? You always need to add an other option.

Can't somebody create a survey on this!!

No, quite often the situation asks for your preference (even if perhaps you prefer neither). An 'other' vote is then effectively not voting, something they could have done with the abstain button. However, I vote other all the time because it best matches my experience.

Not exclusively, sometimes--especially with few options, it's necessary. But when it's something like this:

Yes
No
I don't think so
I don't care
I have something else to say about this
Other

It looks pretty stupid there, doesn't it?

Most of the time, sure, but when you have to pick from a set number of options, (e.g. "which of these movies have you seen?") other is not only not needed, but silly.

It isn't always necessary, as sometimes there simply aren't any more possible options than those on the list. Also, there are occasions when an "other" option would distort the results, as the survey requires a forced choice between the listed options.

Actually, I don't think it is always necessary. I know that when I make a survey, I have a specific question in mind that I would like answered.
i.e.
Which do you like the most: yada or yida?
My options should only have to be:
yada
yida
Both equal
Neither

There should have to be an other. There is no reason for an other. I don't want to know other. I want to know yada or yida.

Yes - I use it a lot!

If there had been an "other" option here - I would have used it!

Some times the person may have a totally different answer to the survey.

If the options are jointly exhaustive then it's neither necessary nor desired. Unfortunately, survey creators sometimes think they've thought of every option when they haven't.

Happy New Year Kristal! I don't want to get into "the other" comment now - it's late (as usual) and I have to get up to work. I haven't had much time for SC lately - so I just checked to see if I had messages... Honestly, I kinda got turned off of this place after the confetti thing...

I dreamed about you last night... I walk into a room where it seemed like a public area but with a private party going on. I was really happy to see you, even if I hadn't "seen" you in a while - I recognized you right away!

PS: I will let it go! No energy left after the holidays, I guess...

I dreamed about an SC'er too last night. not sure whom though. He was tall, husky, with very short full head of dark rough hair and gray side burns. My guess is ASB or Kaleb.
Perhaps we can start having telepathic group gatherings. so you've 'seen' me before. i almost expected that. all those comments in qual were interesting.

I'm a strong person physically, and hopefully, mentally. All my life I heard remarks about what a big kid I was, but I really was not that remarkable - well it's what I thought until I turned 40! I'd kill to be like I was 12 years ago!!
Oh well, I can console myself with the fact the I don't bear sideburns, just the odd, "stray eyebrow"!*wink*

(for someone who doesn't know me, I just painted a "not-too-nice" picture- well, you gotta take some and leave some!)

Well, whoever you are, we seem to connect. I'll keep that part while i figure out the rest, now that I've been knocked off my presumptions. Do you reside on multiple frequencies of being?

I can describe it more like;
Different levels of life - I just can't figure out where I am at this point...
I have been called an "old soul" but I think it's more like the "odd soul"!
I don't know how to tune into different frequencies but it doesn't stop me from surfing!

Old soul, I got. I didn't mean multiple planes, I got that too. I meant the attitude/flavor/frequency which you receive/broadcast on, like being a different person, not at a different place, though being a different person does sort of create a different place.

Yes I think "other" is always necessary because maybe someone's opinion is not always a yes or no but has something else to say on the subject.
