I got a pay-rise one month before our company lost an important contract and made three of my colleagues redundant. So far they have not asked for it back.

Five people have been laid off from where I work. Three of them were management. None of them have actually left yet. They were given substantial notice. Six or eight weeks I think. The two union members will become "displaced workers" which is the situation I'm in right now. I guess they haven't been laid off so much as their positions have been revoked. I'm not sure if there is a distinction. There has also been an announcement that there will be another round of lay offs across the board. Management and union representatives have to select one position from each facility. I just reapplied for a resident custodian position at a new facility that is under construction and nearly complete (slated for January 7th, 2002). I'm not too worried. This position is extremely unpopular. You have to be single, have previous experience, and live on site. Very few people are qualified. No one else seems to want it. I'm not too worried. I'm prepared for anything though.

We all got raises as part of our union contract last April. They haven't been paid out yet in most cases. We are waiting for retro pay cheques. Management is using this as an excuse for the lay offs.

I got a raise 2 1/2 months ago and a promotion last week. The promotion should be followed by a raise as soon as ownership changes hands.

My company implemented a policy where they could make us work 60-hour weeks (or more) at their whim. They have already used it once, and almost certainly will again.

I don't think my situation is really what you're talking about here, but it has changed. I am teaching this semester; I won't be teaching next semester (by choice, not economics), but I did get a great teaching job for next fall.

I've never had a job, and I'm very thankful for that. The only offers around here are stuff like wearing a Santa hat at the Hallmark Store and helping people pick out Sylvester and Tweety stickers all day.

Major layoffs, to the point where we're now sharing office space with another web development company similarly afflicted, and the office is seeming -- um, awfully roomy. Our staff has literally been cut in half, and our co-tenants have been hit even worse.

I got laid off two weeks ago; however, I think there were other "issues" at work within my company. Also, I got a very nice severance package and I had begun to loathe that job anyway. Now I am taking a nice break and enjoying the festive season a lot more than I would've done. I have some time to do things I never would've otherwise. Oh, plus I am predicting that things will right themselves in January and then I will gat a job I like better, and a nice fat raise. * smile *

I wonder if the hype about the recession is exaggerated, or if this is a pretty narrowly selected group of people, or some of both.

I only had one client post-pone a project because he was out of work, but that was great because I had several other clients lined up. However, mine is not the primary income in the family, and my husband's company laid off 5 out of 25 people and gave everyone else a 10% paycut. In February either they'll get a new round of funding and get half of that money back, or the company will cease to exist. This is a tad bit worrisome.

I spent January through November in AmeriCorps*NCCC a 10 month federal program where people ages 18-24 do community service work in return for room & board, a small stipend and an educational award. It is an amazing program; I got the chance to do all kinds of different work & travel around the country. I also made some wonderful friends that I'll keep for life. Now I am doing temp work at a law firm and looking for a job in a library. Next year I'm planning on going back to school to get my MLS.

I'm being laid off by one employer in a few hours. I will be employed by the new employer tomorrow morning (Jan 1). I will still have the same job and responsibilities though. I don't even have to change desks.
