Here's the scenario:

Say I've posted 8 comments on a survey, and UserX wants to reply to my 5th comment. If UserX chooses the wrong comment in the drop-down list (say, number 6 instead of number 5), when I check for replies I'll get a page showing my comment #6 and UserX's reply to comment #5.

Is there any way to have the system put some sort of counter on each comment posted by a user (including replies to other users) so it will be easier to tell which comment in the drop-down list to choose to reply to a specific comment?

Maybe something like "nihon (1)", "nihon (2)", etc.

Alternately, rather than putting a counter next to each comment, you could put a link next to each comment which lets you reply to that specific comment. The plus side of this is that users would not have to remember and match up (or even see) numbers in order to reply to a specific message. The minus side would be that the user would have to decide which comment they're replying to before editing the reply.

I like the idea of being able to reply to a specific comment - especially when replying to anonymous users' comments. If this was implemented, it might also be possible to offer a threaded display of comments, too. This would be good for reading the responses to surveys where people start several simultaneous discussion threads.

The "Replies" feature is pretty stupid, it just show you the last thing you said in that comment chain. If you make more than one comment and someone replies to anything but the last comment you made, it will get it wrong.

Replies are do not track the message they are in reply to, onlt the person. So, there's no good way for me to fix this.

Still, I don't think it happens very often either. So, I'm willing to just let it be a little broken in this case.

In my opinion, threaded comments get ugly, really fast. This forum/feedback system is a good example of that actually. It threads replies, and it gets to be very messy.

I've started to move away from threading like that on my other site's forum area. I'm not using the more standard UltimateBB style of having all replies sit on a single linear reply chain. I think this is a lot neated and easier to follow.

I'm not sure that would be right for survey comments though.

The real purpose of Replies at SC is to highlight that someone is directing a comment at you. Thus, the "Replies" feature can allow you to quickly find replies directed at you or if you're just browsing, you'll see your name and know to read the comment.

The specific binding of reply to original comment doesn't seem important to me. I think it's more important to show comments in a time-linear fashion.
