You can convince your parents to let you get text messaging by offering to pay your cell phone bill, or at least pay the 10 cent charge for every text message you send out.

If that's the case, then I'd say you aren't going to change their mind. Did they tell you why they didn't want you to have text messaging?

I have a cell phone myself, but opted out of text messaging and internet access. I didn't think they were necessary for me to have. Maybe your parents feel the same way.

If you have a cell phone, count yourself lucky and quit whining. Just because your friends text-message the test answers to each other in class doesn't mean you have to.

If you're getting an allowance, then you'd be using their money to pay for texting. Maybe that's why they are being so stubborn.

How can you opt out of txt messaging? I thought it was a part of having a cell phone, no matter what plan you have, as long as your cellphone had that capability?

And also - why do you need txt messaging? Consider yourself lucky your parents are paying for your cellphone. Get a job and do whatever you want.

When I signed up with Sprint, I had the options of having text messaging and an internet connection. I chose not to have either of these options. Neither my friends or I are into texting and I don't see any reason why I need an internet connection on my cell phone. I have a perfectly good broadband connection at home and can go online at work too.

I think Internet connection on your cellphone is stupid, unless you're like a businessman or something. Same goes for having TV on your cellphone. What, your iPod video is out of batteries?

From the TV series The Boondocks, episode titled, Let's Nab Oprah, spoken by the character Gin Rummy, voiced by Samuel L. Jackson.

"You mean aside from the fact that texting is the stupidest fudging thing in the world? I mean, why would anyone in their right mind spend fifteen minutes tryin' to type some crap they could've called and said in five seconds? Plus, it involves typing with your thumbs! Which I just don't approve of. Fudge, I don't know about you, but I don't have time to read nothin' that a jerk typed with they thumbs. Fun Fact: Nothing typed by someone's thumbs has ever been important.

I could actually hear ol' Sam Jackson's voice in my head as I read that. * laughing out loud *

I've only seen a few episodes of boondocks, but I can imagine that being said in that voice. I am trying to imagine a Stan Marsh saying that in his "you know what, I've learned something today..."

My friend took her kid's cell phone off her when she found out they text each other back and forth in class. Most schools don't let the kids have them on during class but you know kids.... * rolls eyes *

No, she hates the thought of other people hearing her voice on the phone. No idea why, she's kinda insecure.

I find it indespensible when I travel, I can check my e-mail. Guess that makes me a businessman ..or....something.

Being able to check email on my cell phone, or use it as a wireless modem for my computer, is really helpful to me.

I dislike texting, too, but there are a lot of times when I want to communicate something to someone that just isn't worth a phone call...an interruption... but email, or if I didn't have email, a text message... is a great way to do it. Discounting how sucky it is trying to enter text on a cell phone.

She's not alone. I particularly hate calling places like for pizza or the pharmacy to ask a question. I'm very shy about the phone.

I thought I got it for free. I think every cell phone has it..but it's weather or not it's on your plan...In my case it wasn't...And..uh..I got in trouble...I also learned that you get charged when someone texts you!
And even after all that..my parents are/were willing to get me unlimited text messeges...

The only person she'll answer the phone to is her mum. Anybody else, she'll just hang up.

I use the internet on my phone all the time. But then I work for a company that provides mobile content so I guess it is part of my job. I feel like such a geek.

Do you have a regular cellphone or a PDA? I don't know, I'm not against the whole concept, it's just that with regular plans going online is a huge rip off. Last time I did it I paid $5 for few minutes. And I just tend to take my laptop with me everywhere I go, so I can check my e-mail anywhere anyway.

I used to have that fear when I was little. But only to strangers.

I use text messaging to talk to two of my life long best friends who have moved out of state. it's one of the best ways to still be open to each other whenever. But with that said. After hearing about all the crap teens do with text messaging and how it gets turned around to be used against them..I will not allow my kids to have it when they reach that age. They will be allowed cell phones because by the time they are that age as dark as the world is its only going to get worse(and thats biblical btw). So I want them to be able to get a hold of me but thats just it.. all their calls will be monitored and their minutes kept very low.. And now a days they are even making family packages were you can set who your kids can talk to and how many minutes they have until they can't use their phones anymore. I am pretty conservative but it means protecting my kids from their idiot peers and yet still allowing them to have a life. I know there are a lot of things your parents may do that you aren't going to like. I was raised by an extrememly strict father(he's a detective) so you can pretty much put that up there with military raising. And I hated him when I was a kid. But I turned out to be a very strong, intelligent and independant adult. I never got into a ton of trouble. Now that I have my own children and I can see things from his perspective I am sooo Glad God gave me the parents he gave me. And I am soo grateful that my parents looked out for me. Your going to hate it, but at least your one of the few who talked their parents into letting you have a cell phone.
