What does X in 'X Files' stand for?

This is for trivia, so the options are:

a) X stood for extra terrestrials
b) X cases were extremely strange
c) X was just a roomy file drawer

I always thought of it as sort of a project 'x'. A secret project.

I didn't watch the show much though.

They weren't all about aliens. I do remember a particular show that involved a circus. X-tra bizarre.

The main theme of the series was extraterrestrial stuff.
I know that much.

Now, I never really saw any episodes considering I was between the age of 2 and 11 on the original run.
The only thing I remember about the show was there was one where they were at a basketball game or something..and the kid went behind the bleachers and died.

But I do know the series was about extraterrestrials.
