In the 'back 40'...of our back yard, there's a line of trees. In those trees are patches of wild blackberries. The red ones so brilliantly catch my eye, and it's those glistening ripe dark blue beauties that seduce me into the wild. the mosquitos are thick rom the ground to about 3 feet up. I wore a heavy flannel sirt buttoned up to my neck, jeans, socks and shoes and carried a small pan to hold the berries I gently drop into it. It's a wonder there were any berries left in the pan as I wildly fanned the mosquitos off my face and hands. It was one of the top three most unpleasent experiences I've ever done. I gathered enough to mix with the juiciest mulberries and made a birthday cheesecake for a friend, and yesterday evening I went for more. I have a friend coming rom out of state for the 4th and I'm thinking homemade blackberry ice cream. It will be a few more trips back there for that.
I triumphantly walked into the kitchen with my prize and the second I turned my back, Mary ate a large handful.
I have a feeling what the 'gold fever' was all about, wanting to go back for more berrys and much more punishment. I will hide all my winnings in the freezer from now on.
The wild strawberrys are catching my eye now. I think as soon as the blackberry season winds up, the strawberrys may be ready. I'm not near as impressed with those, they are tiny and bitter but maybe.......just maybe they will be a treat. I'm kinda hoping not. |

Good luck! I bought berries from the store yesterday and didn't bring any to work today.
Black berries, raspberries and blue berries all just sitting in the fridge. |

Those "mock" (India) strawberries with the yellow flowers? We have a ton of them this year. cropped up all of a sudden. They weren't here last year. They spread like mad! |

No, they are not yellow flowered. They are a bit spindly looking.

I love grazing in the yard. Except for the mosquitos. I went to the dentist yesterday and told him I was repeating to myself 'don't touch my face...don't touch my face...he laughed "becasue they will start itching?' yes...indeed. |

Cloud, you might try wearing a sachet of pennyroyal. I know it works well against fleas. |

Well, there is that. Nothing's perfect, huh? However, I do prefer the scent of pennyroyal to the scent of Off! |

I haven't used Off or anything like that in over 15 years. I've been meaning to try the Listerine, I'm waiting for a sale. Everyone has probably heard it around here by now, so it will be difficult to find it at a decent price.
We use this all natural spray that contains all essential oils. It works, but not to that extreme of being in a near Amazon like experience. I am going to try a differnt oils combonation that might work a bit better.
After the pick, I run like hell into thehouse and spread salt on my hands and rub it in. It takes care of that initial 'itching' and somehow works so that the bites do not itch the next days.
I made ice cream with the berries and farm fresh eggs just dropped off a few days before.. O...M...G... Wonderful. |
