Ever since the elections, I've been hearing and reading a lot of things about what's been going on in Iran after the elections.

I just happened to meet two Iranian men, both professors, three days ago in the airport. Naturally, one of the first things I inquired about, after finding out of their nationality, was the situation in their country.

I was waiting to hear horror stories and complaints, or at least some sort of commentary, but no - both of them were adamant that all is great and nothing bad is happening in their country. I tried to probe a bit further, citing the incidents I've learnt of, but they denied any sort of civil disorder.

I know better than to believe the media fully, but I do not accept their version of the story.

What do you think?

I figure they've probably have voted for Ahmadinejad (sp?) themselves and they support his side. Other thoughts have occurred to me, too. My uncle says that they might be overly careful of what they say because they never know who they might be talking to.

Well, they're in Canada, so. I mean I kinda doubt Ahmadinejad would have secret military police all the way in Canada. My guess would be they're Ahmadinejad voters. Then again, would educated professors really be for Ahmadinejad.

Maybe its just a cultural and/or generational thing. They don't want to "lose face" or something. Or, they just don't want to talk to you cause you're a woman.

What SY said....

but about what your uncle said... I can see how living in a place with a corrupt government would make a person paranoid about talking to anyone... even in Canada.

I did not meet them in Canada. I met them at the Istanbul airport.

Well, Turkey is a pretty secular country. And about to be EU members. Or is there something about Turkey I don't know about. I mean they still haven't owned up to that whole invading Aramia thing.

Or what they said, he's just paranoid.

I remember Turkey was in the news recently (well, a year or two ago). Some new guy came to power and he was pretty Muslim or something like that.

I don't know about Turkey. They have photos of Ataturk wherever you turn and his secularism reminds me a lot of leader-worship cult, kind of like in North Korea.
