Hi guys,
Haven't been about in while *wave* - had a very hectic life lately.
But of course as soon as I have a question based around the US, I think of SC!
I've recently moved in with an american girl (or rather, she's english, but her mum is american and she speaks like a hybrid, saying mom etc) and she's doing July 4th dinner - she said she's going to make american dishes and a cake decorated with the american flag. I'd really like to contribute, so if anyone's got any ideas, I'm all ears!
Was thinking Waldorf Salad...hamburgers...southern fried chicken.

The most typical July 4th food is picnic/barbeque: bbq ribs, bbq chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, baked beans, corn on the cob, corn bread, sweet potato pie, and my favorite...a gin bowl, prefferably made from Bombay Saphire. I don't know what Waldorf salad is, so I can't help you there. And I do think I would replace fried chicken with BBQ chicken.
But of course, this is all subjective. I think you could generally get away with any food typically eaten outside. The most American touch, however, would be a few fireworks (pyrotechnics); that would impress your roomate more than any traditional 4th food. So, good luck, and I hope you have fun on my nation's birthday.

I never thought of Waldorf salad as American, I only ever had it in Europe. I dont know about other people, but I find it kind of weird and dont think many other people would appreciate the whole nut/apple thing. | jettles

Think salads: Potato, macaroni, bean, coleslaw. Americans like things with a lot of mayo.
They's (mom's) famous Kidney bean salad:
1-2 cans Kidney beans
1 Onion diced
2-4 Stalks of celery diced
Miracle Whip/Mayo
Salt/Pepper
Refrigerate/Serve.
It's best made the day before but it's not necessary.
It comes out cold and crunchy and colorful. | cloudhugger

Cole slaw and watermelon.
Chicago Style Hotdogs: All beef hotdogs, poppyseed bun. Slices of tomatoes, cucumbers, pickle relish, diced onion , a dill spear, celery salt and optional sport peppers. | verouge

Thanks for the tips guys! One of the girls that was coming was from South Carolina and wanted fried chicken, so I made that and an apple pie. Other dishes we had were beans with bacon, potato salad (made with Miracle Whip, which I've not had before), corn, homemade hamburgers, sausages, vegetables and then a cake iced with the american flag. It was very good. | verouge
