I have never had one until now. I can't bend over and I have things I need to do! Anyone know how to get rid of it? All I did was bend over to get some laundry and got a knot squeezing, releasing, squeezing in my lower back, just above my pelvic bone. It sucks! Ibuprofen didn't do anything. |

If it were me, I would ice, 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off till it stopped spasming. than tomorrow switch from ice to heat, ice to heat. But that's what I would do. |

My friend has something to say:
No name Back and Muscle relaxant-they look like horse pills...she also uses them for PMS as well as back pain-puts her out of her pain immediately but not out like a Zombie...it works! Has to be the horse pills, though...no mamby pamby liquid or anything like that (unless it's beer). Take two or three. Not for colts

I discovered this too late, the ice part. I should done ice first, then heat. The heat helped sooth but didn't get rid of the knot. I guess that will take time to heal. I used to inwardly roll my eyes when people complained about back pain but if this is what they are experiencing I owe them an apology. It really hurts. I had actually just taken Motrin for menstrual cramps 30 min before this happened. At first I couldn't stand up but now I can bend over. I'm tough, I'll make it...maybe... |

RG, you mention menstrual cramps... my cramps are not just in my abdomen, they also manifest in my back, sometimes wrapping all the way around like I have on a huge girdle that's been pulled too tight. If the bending over was a sudden movement, your back may have not been 'ready'. Cloudy had good advice, and it's not too late to follow it. I would still do the ice/heat alternation... in therapy school we were taught to do that in 2-5 minute intervals, with cold first, and during the alternations heat should be applied longer than cold... i.e. cold for one minute, heat for three, etc. I would not be surprised of you were stiff for a few days, especially until your 'moon time' is over. |

I actually think the initial injury happened when I was doing some stretching and felt a pop sensation in that very place. I just didn't make the connection until today. It is a little better now. Might take a few more days for complete recovery. |

Hell, yeah.... I've done the 'pop' thing before, and was in pain and somewhat disabled for months. Be careful from now on... the scar tissue that will develop is less pliable than muscle, and therefore more prone to tearing.
Funny that this tread came up when it did.... last night I was carrying a bag groceries in my left hand from the car to my front door, a journey all of 25 feet, and halfway there the middle of my back on the left side of my spine suddenly seized up... I barely made it in the door before putting down the groceries in the living room and breathing through my pain. The rest of the night I was fine, and when I got up I was fine, but when I got into my husband's truck to go to lunch, the spasm seized up again, making it hard to breathe. It feels like someone is trying to tear my rib out through my back. It's been going on all day, and I've never had pain there before. I'm probably going to call my Dr. in the morning. Need to talk to him about meds anyway.
Hope you are feeling better, RG. |

My mother said she thought she was having a heart attack once from a spasm in her middle back. She said should couldn't breath and was in pain. She even went to the ER. |

Tiny petite redheads shouldn't haul around bags of dog food that are half her weight.
How heavy was the bag, BTW? |

Another thing you can do....since it's starting to feel better now - is to lay on a tennis ball...and kind maneuver yourself over the knot in the muscle to work it out some more.....This usually feels really good.....(You can also do it standing up pressing your tennis ball up against a door.) My Physical therapist taught me this.
.....And no, for those of you already thinking it....there was nothing kinky going on between me and my PT. |

44lbs. I don't typically mess with the monster bag of dog food but I had this 'I can do it by myself' moment, like my 3 year old nephew...'I can do it my by self!' It felt strange at the time but no lingering signs of damage. Note to self: Leave monster bag of dog food for the tall strong chick that was just in the other room. |

Most of the time with me, I'm thinking "I can't do this by myself!" But I hurt myself doing it anyway, because I don't exactly have anyone around helping me. |

I love the challange of doing the 'impossible' when no one else is around. Than I see their face with big eyes that's my fun. |

Yes, me too. I once put together this giant computer desk thing, L shape with shelves. I did all by my self! one day and surprised everyone. I had to open the boxes outside, still in the truck and take each piece into the house individually. It was mostly out of impatience, though. |
