bill	#1 posted May 19, 2008 at 11:11am (EDT) Question: Are you a deontologist or a teleologist? Explanation: Deontologists believe that there are certain actions that are morally right or wrong. Eg: Murder is always wrong. Teleologists believe that it is the consequences of an action which are important. Eg: Murder is ok if you save someone else in the process. No 'other' option so you must choose between them. The terms teleological and deontological aren't the sum of ethics in philosophy. It just happens that all ethical theories fall into one or the other. I'm no sure what you mean by morality on priorities. I don't know what you mean by 'consequences don't always cover that.' Virtue ethics (How can I become a better person?) is based on character as opposed to actions and their consequences, but it's still counted as teleological. Basically, if the ethical theory has got definite rules behind it (Natural Law, Kantian Ethics, and Divine Command Theory, for example), it's deontological. If it is concerned with an end, it's teleological.

Most countries have a loose sort of rule utilitarianism - By following rules which should bring the greatest good, the greatest good will come to the greatest number.
