Hi bill * smile *

So, almost two years ago, you answered my Why so many hits? question.

Now I have another. As discussed on the 9/11 survey, certain user pages have been getting more than 100 hits per day for some time (and more than 2000 in the last month). From the users on the Users page, it seems to be affecting me, you, CK, jen, Jessica, jettles, Lysannus, Teddy, and they. Presumably, it may also be affecting other users who are no longer active. Any idea why? It isn't because of my Death to America joke is it? * wry smile *

It's all from one IP address from a Canadian ISP (it seems). Aspects of it look suspicious (the web browser identifier keeps changing). It's hitting various users and surveys.

I banned the IP... *shrug*

What if the people who are watching us make us all disappear at once. Survey Central will just be left here like a ghost ship until something goes wrong and bill isn't around to fix it. I wonder if anyone looking into each individual disappearance ever makes the connection to SC.

Perhaps only one of us will survive... like Kristal or Cleo... and no one will ever believe her story.

What if someone hacked into everyone's account except yours, and is pretending to be all of those people. Here you are, talking to one lone hacker - thinking you have a little group to talk to.

And what if I show up after a brief holiday, and read this and there is no one else alive.?
How would I know?? How would yous know?? Did anyone survive 9-11?

I suspect that this actually involved you looking at some data and then noting the ISP. However, in my mind, you tracked that ISP through some never-to-be-matched computer wizardry. Then you hacked into Canada's secret internet database to extract details about location as Matrix style computer code swirled around you. And by now, you will have most certainly have sent winged monkeeeeeees to dispatch the guilty party.

Nobody had better mess with bill * smile *

It's just that an IP address can be resolved to a host name (usually) or you can get "whois" info on it that identifies who owns it. That name is generally the ISP. And, there are services that will tell you which country an IP address is from. Though, this is not 100% accurate.

It's a lot of text mostly, not so much glowing swirling computer graphics, unfortunately.

Hmm, it doesn't seem to have stopped.

Does it hurt (or help) the site in any way? Or is it just one of those things?

What makes you think it hasn't stopped?

The only damage I'm aware of is that the hits for some surveys and user pages are off because of it.

The same users seem to have had about 80 or so hits to their user pages today.

I'm not seeing that in the log. Maybe it's some other pattern. Can you give me a specific page that is getting unusual hits?

Wow, yeah, the pattern has gotten more complex. Now it's not just coming from one IP address, but from many of the same class-c (or first 3 numbers in the address are the same). But, it has the same pattern of the constantly changing browser identifier. The IPs seem to be connected to amazon's ec2 cloud computing system (e.g. a server acquired via amazon, I think). Still fairly anonymous. And, I can't tell what value doing this would have either. * wry smile *

I guess I can try blocking the entire range this time...

I dived into the rabbit hole just now... More IPs are involved. I'm tracking them better by the oddly rotating browser id instead. I deleted some hits based on the timing of them. I'm going to try to do more. Also, I'm changing the code to view these hits as 'robots' (search engine indexers), so they won't get counted as hits. Maybe all a waste of time, but if it's being done for 'hits', deleting them may discourage them somewhat. The hits may also be messing up my ad impressions and the robot things helps a bit with that too (doesn't show ads). From what I can tell, they are still hitting the sites on the IPs haven't banned yet, so I may ban some more, but they probably have too many...

What is making them hit certain people but not others? Not that I want to be one of them, but what happened? It latched onto a few random users and won't let go?

#27 posted October 6, 2014 at 4:51pm (EST)
Not just certain users but some surveys too. I have no idea why this is being done.

I delete most if not all of the "hits" now. So, I think most hits numbers should be more normal now...

Mysterious problem sort of solved, I guess...
