Topic URLs (or links) will now have words from the subject of the topic.

So, for example. This topic:

http://surveycentral.org/forum/General/topic/15224...

Will now look like this:

http://surveycentral.org/General/rather-x-y--15224...

I'm also dropping the "/forum/" and "/topic/" parts.

Similarly, survey links have changed from something like this:

http://surveycentral.org/survey/34970.html

to this:

http://surveycentral.org/survey/circumstances-answ...

In all cases, the old-style link should still work but when it's used, the URL will get redirected to the new-style link.

Doing this may help Survey Central achieve better results from search engines. In other words, pages on Survey Central may be found better by people searching and thus increase the chance we'll get new users by that process, or minimally a few extra ad clicks.

It's a fairly big internal chance and something might have broken somewhere. So, let me know if you notice any problems.

I'm thinking it could lead to some rather comical links.

Ok, so not hilarious - but discovering an entire hair-piece in the cobbler puts a whole different slant on things smiley:::grin

It worked when I tried it. What happens when you try?

I get a box with an error "No data received" and two buttons "reload" and More" when I hit reload I get the same page. when I hit more, I get a message under it...

Unable to load the webpage because the server sent no data.
Error code: ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

that was when I tried it in chrome.

Here's what happened when I tried in firefox

The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

other surveys load right in both firefox and chrome

I'm able to see a cached copy (as it appeared on nov 14) the last post I see is: Peter Kay is very funny!

Maybe someone posted something after that that's causing problems?

LindaH - from my side, I can see you loading the survey page. I also tried signing on as you and I was able to see the page as you.

I would guess there's something going on with your computer's network setup. Maybe some sort of web accelerator. I know it used to be not uncommon for caching of pages to happen at the internet service provider, or at some router-like device.

Or, maybe an add-on, like an ad blocker might cause something like this?

If 2 different web browser don't work, that seems to imply it's something beyond just an add-on, unless both browsers have the same add-on.

One thing you might try is this alternate URL for the survey:

http://surveycentral.org/?V=14224

If that works, it would seem to imply the URL just has some bad cache somewhere.

OK thanks. I wonder if it is related to a problem I'm having with some news links. Sometimes letters in the URL are replaces with the little question mark in a diamond symbol. Same with numbers in google reviews links.

maybe... I'm not sure what would cause that. Well, sometimes special characters in URLs get encoded. Like a space is sometimes turned into a %20. I'm not sure what a little question mark in a diamond symbol might be though.

Maybe I should make a topic on this question mark thing in general forum. I've been meaning to...
