How much does your home really cost you?
Over the years I have received some recurrent advice about my mortgage (or rent) in the context of my overall financial outlook. Invariably, I have been told that my home (mortgage or rent) should never be more than 1/3 of my total monthly take-home pay because I will not have enough for other expenses, saving for my future, or home maintenance. My question is thus, what fraction of your monthly expenses goes to your mortgage/rent, and how does it affect your overall finances? | Total Votes | % of Voters | Female Votes | Male Votes | % of Female Votes | % of Male Votes | Average Age | Answer | | 3 | 7.0% | 1 | 2 | 4.5% | 15.4% | 31.0 | Nunya, as in none of your damn business. | | 1 | 2.3% | 1 | .. | 4.5% | .. | .. | 1/5,… | | 3 | 7.0% | 1 | 2 | 4.5% | 15.4% | 48.1 | 1/4,… | | 7 | 16.3% | 5 | 2 | 22.7% | 15.4% | 37.1 | 1/3,... | | 2 | 4.7% | 2 | .. | 9.1% | .. | .. | 1/2,... | | 2 | 4.7% | .. | 2 | .. | 15.4% | .. | More than 1/2,... | | 9 | 20.9% | 7 | 2 | 31.8% | 15.4% | 28.8 | I don’t pay rent or mortgage. | | 8 | 18.6% | 5 | 3 | 22.7% | 23.1% | 37.8 | None of these answers accurately reflects my expenses/finances. |
