How many people with the each of the following names do you currently know?

Back to Survey

(I am aware that it's hard to define 'knowing' someone, and you may chose to interpret it in your own way. However, if you wish guidelines, they are as follows: either someone you know really well, like a good friend or a family members, somebody you can just call up to chat, somebody you meet on diurnal basis.)

What I have compiled here is the 10 most common first names in North America. What you have to do for each name is tell me how many from each name you know (eg. I know four Daves).

The names:
James (Jamie)
John (Jon, Jonathan, Johnny)
Robert (Bob, Bobby)
Mary
Michael (Mike, Mikey)
William (Will, Bill, Billie, Willy)
David (Dave)
Richard (Dick)
Charles (Charlie)
Joseph (Joe)

kate - the reason why there is only one female name is because there is a far larger variety of female names out there than male.

You really should change 'Billie' to 'Billy' because it's the more common spelling.

I find it hard to believe that there is only one common female name, yet there are all these male names.

Is there some particular reason for only having one female name? I know far more women than I do men mainly because my job has a larger ratio of female to male employees.

You are likely to get just names as answers.

James, Robert, Michael, William, David.

I guess it is fine as it is, but it would look so much nicer the other way.

SC: then, that's what I would say in the explanation. While I chuckled at your criticism of the pedantic relativism that exists here; it does little to improve the survey. Explain why you want your survey the way you do and I bet it will get approved faster, however, I still think it's reasonable as is.

Thank you for the suggestion, however, that is not what I was going for. I am not interested in whether there would be anyone by these names known to the people answering the questions (which would be what such method would represent). This is left essay so you are free to pick any of these names and tell us the answer.

You can make this multiple pick by making each name into an option. We can then click on each name and give the corresponding number of people we know by that name. You might want to fix the 'Joseph' name as well. It should be 'Joe' and 'Johhny' is spelled 'Johnny'. You might also consider adding 'Billy' to the 'William' option because it's a more common spelling then 'Billie'.

You are missing the word 'the' which should be before 'following'.
