Enheduanna: if they don't someone can just fix what needs fixing and I'm sure it'll get through.

Does seem to highlight the difference fairly well * smile * I think the difference is one tries to provide something short that sounds good with no doubt or amibiguity, whereas the other actually wants to be accurate * wink *

As an example of which site works better: look up the name 'Mary'

I just went to both sites. The one Jonathan mentioned got the etymology of my name the wrong way around (it said it was a form of a name - in actual fact that name is a form of mine), a pet peeve of mine. I then went to the site Enheduanna mentioned where it had it very much right. The meaning of my name was basically the same on both but it was much more literal on the one Enh mentioned, I think this would lead to more accurate meanings since they're effectively not translating it into their form of english like babynames.com. I found this meaning interesting - it's not really *different* to the one I knew, but the only sites I have been to before have been those ones that tend to go on for half a page, rather than just a couple of words (they tend to me more bs new age personality descriptions - what your name has come to mean, rather than how it came about/what it literally means). I always thought a link was necessary, and personally think the second (first-name.com) is much better, as from my ***EXTREMELY*** limited viewing babyname has errors and firstname doesn't * smile * (sorry about the length of this comment)

Me again...I think this page:
http://www.first-name.com/firstnamesmeanings.html
is much better. It is far more accurate on the Hebrew names, which would make me trust it more for other names as well. And it gives interesting background information, for instance, who the biblical or historical figures were.

But I can't say I think much of the babynames.com etymologies--at least not the Hebrew ones. Perhaps there's a better source somewhere.

I think it's a very interesting question. And I don't think it's confusingly worded, but I guess a link to a page with meanings of names might be a good idea. I was going to say that it wouldn't be necessary, because I think most people know what their names mean, but jonathan does not actually mean "God is merciful," so I changed my mind! FYI, jonathan, it means "God has given" (as in, "given me a son").

I can't believe I just answered the damn survey instead of voting on it. In any case, I think the explanation text should have a link to a site where people can look up the meaning of the name, like http://www.babynames.com.

My name means "God is merciful" and based on me being a Benevolent Ruler in the Medieval Kingdom survey, I guess it partially applies. My parents wanted to name me Christopher Robin, but a cousin born a few months before me was named Christopher so they went with their second choice (Jonathan) because they liked the sound.

So much explanation is confusing. I'd say be more direct. The option "I changed my name and do not wish to talk about my given name" is sort of weird, too.

What they said. The link could replace most of your (IMO confusing) explanation, though you may want to leave the bit about answering regardless of why your name was chosen.

What eris said... Also, almost all names do have certain meanings (like strong, beautiful).. maybe you could link to a site that defined people's names.

The explanation confuses things by making it unclear whether the survey is about why people choose the names, or whether they actually wind up accurate regardless of the reasons for their choice. If you just delete a bunch of it, it will work much better.
