I don't make money (yet). When I do, I think I would be shaking my brain, but probably also my blood, sweat and tears.

my brain? I guess that would have to be it in a literal sense. I earn my money by thinking, reasoning and calculating and not by any physical exertion of any body parts. In fact, I get pretty stiff from sitting all day long - 1.5 hrs in the car getting to work, 8-9 hrs at work, 1.5 hrs back home. I hardly ever sit down at home except to eat dinner.

My brain. Which ironically would damage it and cause me to lose my money making abilities.

My SO. He's the money-maker. I contribute money for our expenses, too, but I don't exactly make money. It's more like I get money from nice people. I'm a big mooch!!

I hear about your SO quite a bit but I've never really heard any details about him.. Who is he? What's he do?

And would it be rude to ask you for more details about how you get your money? I'm just sooo damn nosy!

But hey, you post really intriguing comments * grin *

My SO's a computer geek--specifically a network administrator. I met him through a mutual friend; we've been together a little over three years; we've been living together a little over one year. And we just moved to San Francisco together. He got a job out here, and he'd been itching to get out of Boston for a while. He's from Hawaii (although he's not ethnically Hawaiian). The weather in Boston was killing him, as you can imagine! He also rides a motorcycle, and Boston's not great for that since you can't ride for over half the year.

These days I get my money mostly from family, and from some savings I had which also came from family. In the past I've had grants through school, but I ran out of those. I've also had help from a generous friend. And I've had teaching jobs that gave me a bit of money as well. So far I haven't had to take out any loans for grad school, which has been great. I applied for some fellowships last year, but I didn't get any of them. Only one of them was really substantial enough to pay the bills. Most of the time I lived in Boston, I lived in a house that my brother and sister-in-law owned, so I got a pretty sweet deal on the rent. Before that I lived with housemates. Since my SO and I moved and it's more expensive for us here, he pays more of the rent, but we split most of the other costs.

I was just reading an article about the proposed marriage amendment in Ohio, and I was wondering if you were concerned about it. As I understand it, it could affect you since it targets any unmarried couple living in a "marriage-like" situation. Do you think it will cause problems for you?

Thanks for answering! My curiosity has been quenched * smile *

I actually hadn't heard anything about it.. which is strange to me because I am a news junkie.. How are they trying to screw me over now? Hell, that was the one thing I had going for my financial situation. Do you have a link?

There's an article about it at salon.com, but I think you have to subscribe to read it. In case you do, it's: http://salon.com/news/feature/2004/10/18/gayohio/i.... It doesn't allow any kind of legal status for couples living together in a situation meant to "approximate" marriage--which means no domestic partners of any kind. Apparently it's only two sentences long; the first sentence defines marriage as between a man and a woman, and the second one says: "This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage." It requires government offices and state schools to stop offering domestic partner benefits, but private companies can do what they want, so I doubt your work benefits would be affected, if Rod's on your insurance or something. I don't think it'll affect your single-parent status, either--in fact, I think it will ensure the opposite! On the other hand, it could mean that you and Rod have absolutely no legal rights as partners, so you can't make medical decisions for each other, etc, etc. Not to mention that it's completely anti-gay. The open-endedness of it is what has a lot of people worried.

It pisses me off that the government thinks it can dictate relationships like this.. why the hell should they care who has a penis and who has a vagina? If the government makes laws based on sex, I think we should all be allowed to run around naked.

The only way that he is considered my domestic partner is with my insurance.. so I really doubt this will affect me personally.. except that it makes me very very angry.

We already don't have any legal rights as partners.. if something happened, we'd have to rely on our parents to make the right decisions for us.. when they are gone though, it could be a real problem.

We seriously need to get rid of Bush.. * frown *

Well, I guess I know which way you'll be voting! (Not that I really had any doubt.)

It pisses me off, too. What astounds me is that so many people are going along with all this bullcrap. There are something like 10 states voting on marriage amendments, and many of them seem likely to pass. And the fact that Ohio is even in play for this election is amazing--it's been hit incredibly hard in the past four years. Tons of people have lost their jobs, and Cleveland is apparently the poorest city in the country. Time for regime change...

On an optimistic note, maybe the fact that it's even an issue is a good thing..

Back in the 60's, when people were protesting for equal rights, it probably seemed hopeless too. There were a lot of closed minded people and politicians that didn't want things to change.

Maybe, like that, this is just the beginning.. and things will continue to get better for our kids and their kids..

... or maybe I'm just in a mood * wink *

But in those days, they were pushing to pass the Civil Rights Act--an act which expanded people's rights. Now people are pushing to constrain people's rights, and even to take some of them away. It's like playing defense instead of offense. I think you're right that it's progress that it's even an issue, but it seems like it's not moving in the right direction at all. The fact that anti-gay amendments are being added to constitutions, not taken away, is what scares me.

My brain! The kids I teach think it is just mind boggling that I grade grammar tests with a "key" and that I have no notes by which to give them definitions or sentences as examples. They all come from my head. I barely use their textbook for anything other than a few practice sentences (so that I don't have to write them on the board) and that I have asked my school not to order workbooks for my classes since I prefer to do my own worksheets. One day, I will write my own text book for grammar.
