I know the price of milk, but it varies according to which store I'm at (Dari-Mart is cheaper than WinCo, but they are both cheaper than Fred Meyer-unless they have a sale on milk & Freddie's generally cheaper than Safeway or Albertsons). Does that answer your question. Basically, it varies too much to give an exact answer.

30p a pint in Sainsbury's. I took note today because I knew this survey was on its way out of qual. Ordinarily I wouldn't have a clue because I don't use milk. Ask me how much anything else I use on a regular basis costs though, and I could tell you. I have to mind my pennies.

For example, I just checked the Freddie's ad online and a half-gallon (plastic jug-store brand) is on sale for $1.25 right now (4 for $5), the current (and regular) price of a half-gallon of milk at WinCo in a plastic jug is $1.39 (store), $1.49 for a carton (paper) of Darigold brand. You see how it varies? Generally, though you will find that (at least in my area) that the name brands such as Darigold, Umpqua, Echo Spring are more expensive than the store brands. The exception being Dari-Mart brand because they have their own dairy and plant in the county and run their own Dari-Mart stores and even then it varies as to whether you buy your milk in a returnable merlon jug, a paper carton or a standard plastic jug.

It varies. At the supermarket I pay around $2.95 for 3 litres. At the fuel station I pay that for 2 litres.

Really? It's always seemed intuitive to me, if that makes any sense. How can another animal's milk really be all that healthy for us. I dunno. I believe that there's more harm than good to come from dairy products. I've had a hell of a time cutting down on them, but I'll keep trying.

I would have thought in the same way as another animal's meat is good for us.... * wry smile * There are some dodgy things added to milk that it might be wise to avoid, but that site seemed less concerned by that than the milk itself.

Around two dollars a litre. I don't pay much attention to the exact prices of anything, but I have a pretty good idea what they cost. I shop at a number of different stores, each of which would have their own prices.

This question comes from a situation that happened several years ago in USA, where a standing president (I think, I forget which one), didn't know the price of milk. The media went off on it, as it seemed to show the president was out of touch with the common man.

That was president Bush Sr. His rival Bill Clinton who became president knew what the price of milk was.

I agree about meat. I think one of the main concerns about milk itself, is that it's structured to fulfill the nutrional requirements of a growing calf, and some people believe that increased consumption of milk, and the hormones that are naturally present in it, is causing things like very premature puberty.

I always thought prmature pubert related more to the stuff we inject cows with to make them produce more milk - like giving them extra oestrogen. That's a production problem, rather than something inherent in cows. The major reason for premature puberty is probably that we get so much more to eat nowadays than we used to.

I think it's presumptive for anyone to think someone is out of touch with the common man for not knowing the price of milk. I can't remember numbers or prices very well. That doesn't make me out of touch with anything but numbers.

I buy organic milk, which is almost twice as expensive as regular milk, but I don't know exactly, because I don't really remember the price. * laughing out loud *

2.60$ for a gallon of "Schepp's" vitamin D milk. 1.70$ for a half gallon. Same price for "True value" 2% milk.. This is at the Wal-Mart in Huntsville, TX, and hour north of Houston.

Now if you mean the price from the cows, the price to raise the cow, the shiping, the materials used for production, etc., then I have no idea.

Well, I didn't make this up... it's just something that was in the media at one point. I think the point is that some people have to mind every penny and so they are forced to keep track of the price of basic foods. Perhaps, the common man would not have the luxury of buying organic milk because it is too expensive.

(reply to LindaH) posted 27-Oct-2003 5:45am
I know that I don't keep track of prices because they don't really matter that much to me. I guess I have plenty of money (at least for food... at the level, I don't care... more expensive stuff, I do care about price). Though, my dad, who has a lot more money than me, is a real penny pincher, clips coupons, etc. He knows the price of a whole lot of food items and will go out of his way (different stores) to get a better price on a single item. It's sort of a hobby for him.

This is one of those stock questions that celebrities get asked in interviews to see whether they're out of touch with the drudgery of daily life.

Trouble is, I don't really know the answer either, at least not to the question, "How much is a pint of milk?". I buy mine in litres, and a 2 litre bottle of milk is about £1.10. I guess a pint would be about 30p?

he doesn't mind it on cereal, but if he's doing more 'playing' than actual eating of it, the cereal gets funkier quicker, so instead of chucking out the cereal all the time, i just give him the other stuff for in the long run i guess it evens out...but he never drinks the cow milk though, only the soy, he's been drinking soy since he's was an infant. when he was born i nursed him, but my own milk wasn't as plentiful as it should have been, so i decided to nurse AND supplement w/soy at the same time..i give him eden soy original extra, he doesn't really care for the vanilla or chocolate flavored stuff though...which one do you prefer?
and yes i totally agree that it's a shame that 'good' food costs more, but i guess i'm more conscious of portion control now, just beacuse of the cost factor..and not to mention how much better everything tastes w/o all that chemical crap! (have you ever tried 'newman-o's'?? organic oreos...holy cow, AWESOME stuff!! * smile * )

I have had the pleasure of one Newman-O, and it was yummy! We buy Silk vanilla soymilk, and I like it quite a bit, even my husband, former milk-aholic can deal with it! That's too bad about your problems with breastfeeding, but I commend you for working so hard at it! One of my favorite brands, for quick and easy stuff, is Amy's. Yum yum yum.
