| hunter | posted 7-Apr-1998 5:57pm Weird, from the options you present it sounds like you mean "Do guys envy each other's penises," in which case, I've known many guys who were completely happy with theirs and some who've wished it were longer or thicker or circumcised or not, but I've never heard a man wish they had a specific different penis. But the phrase "penis envy" usually refers to a feeling women supposedly have, where they wish they had a penis. This I have never really understood, nor heard any other woman express this desire. I think we've all had moments of "it might be nice to be a man" and "penises are fun" but I've never actually wanted one of my own. They seem dreadfully inconvenient and awkward to me. It might be fun to try one on for a while, but I don't think I'd want to be stuck with one always. |
| Artemis | posted 8-Apr-1998 12:02am I really don't care if it does or not. |
| bill | posted 8-Apr-1998 8:10am I honestly think that if my penis was bigger, I'd feel more confident overall and in general in my life. This isn't specifically envy though. *** Inconvenient? I beg to differ (see jen's comment) |
| Atzilut | posted 8-Apr-1998 3:33pm Yes. Penis envy exists between gay men. And for the record, female genitalia *terrifies* me. |
| milktree | posted 8-Apr-1998 6:15pm just *who* is supposed to have the penis envy, anyway? **** "penis" isn't in the dictionary? |
| Dolemite | posted 8-Apr-1998 7:25pm I think most men, including Freud and myself, would rather be men than women. Freud just took it a little farther and assumed women felt the same way. MILKTREE: Don't tell me you had to look up the word "penis" for a definition? (I know you meant spell checker; I'm just being smart, er stupid.) |
| elijahblue | posted 8-Apr-1998 8:43pm I'm sure it exists in that at some time, some little girl did actually see a little boy's penis and want one for herself. But as a general rule to base an entire psychological system on? It's the worst idea Freud came up with. **Dolemite: but would you rather be a man because you have a penis or for other reasons? I believe Freud in his time may have mistaken privilege envy for penis envy. |
| steve | posted 8-Apr-1998 9:09pm I don't (and sort of can't) know, as I'm not a woman. I don't envy others their penises as opposed to mine, but that's not what I understand the term to mean. |
| Jimmy | posted 10-Apr-1998 12:58am i think we need to redefine this. but regardless, it's a figment of men's feeble imaginations to make them think that they have something worth envying. damn freud! |
| romkey | posted 11-Apr-1998 2:51am I have wondered what it would be like to have a great big penis that would flop around a lot and have to be tucked in and such but generally speaking I've never really been envious of another man's penis. I think some people are though. |
| jefff | posted 12-Apr-1998 11:31am Are we talking Freud's definition (ie a woman's desire to possess a man's penis) or some other, more vague discussion of envy amongst members of the peniled gender(s)? |
| miyu | posted 12-Apr-1998 7:01pm uh.. well i 'don't want his' and i don't have one so does that mean i go for choice 'other'?? |
| vanadium | posted 13-Apr-1998 1:23pm Hm...probably somewhere in the psych texts with a note next to it saying "See: Clit Envy" |
| booker | posted 13-Apr-1998 9:13pm guys envy other guys penises or women wanting a penis of their own? yes; probably no. |
| Jaime | posted 14-Apr-1998 6:04am In general, no! I think this is a "men" invention to wake up masculine ego... **** hmmm... really good response from Jen : it's the only one logical reason to have penis envy! |
| Tonya | posted 16-Apr-1998 6:42am I think it does. I know ya'll look at each other in the locker room at a gym |
| Mark | posted 23-Apr-1998 11:45am I don't really know, but I wanted to share a (female) friend's comment about penis envy: "I don't want a penis; I just want access to one!" |
| nbarone | posted 27-Apr-1998 6:42pm my lack of it doesn't prove it doesn't exist, but...i've never witnessed it |
| lelle | posted 3-May-1998 7:19pm Well. I would only want one if I could have it be detachable... However, it's one of the many things I've always wanted to have. |
| plots | posted 7-May-1998 11:14am Yes in the same way the breast envy exists |
| daver | posted 14-May-1998 10:33am Not for me...I've got one, thanks. It certainly can and does exist in some people so equipped (un-equipped?) |
| jjg | posted 17-May-1998 7:34pm Mine works fine, don't see the concept of wanting another one. I'm not gay either so I still am not interested in the size of other men. |
| reality | posted 6-Jul-1998 4:35pm Could be.. there is the idea that bigger is better, and some women apparently agree.. to quote a friend 'size does matter, too a point'. it isn't something that worrying or agonizing over can fix. I can't conceive of women experiencing it, other than the ones that wish they were male (similar to a male wishing he were female). |
| gilly | posted 14-Aug-1998 4:08pm Oh, I'd kind of like to borrow a penis for a week or so and see what it's like, but on the whole I think they're kind of silly and I'm pretty happy with mine. |
| eloradanan | posted 27-May-2006 12:45am I don't know. |
