Do you think that online music sales will make the concept of an "album" obsolete?
Online music sales systems, such as iTunes, make it possible to download individual tracks from any artist in any combination. Some commentators are predicting that this will mean that the whole concept of a band or artist releasing an album of tracks will become obsolete, with the future being individual songs released on an ongoing basis as and when they are ready. Others disagree, and consider that there will always be a role for a collection of tracks grouped together by theme or chronology, and thus making up an album.
What's your opinion - will the album become obsolete?

n 1: one or more recordings issued together; originally released on 12-inch phonograph records (usually with attractive record covers) and later on cassette audio tape and compact disc [syn: record album] |
| msgman | old | posted 1-Aug-2004 2:17am "Album" is the correct term - it means a collection of tracks, irrespective of the medium on which it is presented. |

| pandora | reasonable | posted 31-Jul-2004 11:18pm I think the word album is appropriate to this question. It doesn't mean only records. |
| darkshadowsseeker | old | posted 31-Jul-2004 9:45pm ck is correct. Very few artists record on vinyl nowadays and that's what an album is-recorded on vinyl. |

| cerealkiller | needs work | posted 31-Jul-2004 7:48pm This makes no sense because albums are already obsolete and have been for some time. "Albums" are vinyl records. You may be better saying "CD" now, the more cammon term nowadays. |
