SRV, to me, is a guy that I would grant a Keeping The Blues Alive (KBA) Award to. It's mainly thanks to him that many "mainstream" people (including the younger crowd) still listen to the blues today. Blues has not been on the airwaves since the 50's ya know! It's difficult for these artists to be heard and truly appreciated with their wide range of music that comes under an umbrella called 'blues'. It ranges from Bluegrass to Zydeco; all have different sounds, all have spawned and inspered new musics. Keith Richard said: "If you don't know the blues... There's no point in picking up the guitar and playing rock and roll or any other form of popular music." Truer words have never been spoken...

To say that Matt Andersen sounds like any other blues guy out there is an understatement. I see a WHOLE LOT of blues artists and never has any of them brought tears to my eyes yet Matt did so the night he was competing as well as the night he was at the Orpheum Theater for the finals. None of the clips I found online do him justice; they're like taking pictures of the Rockies when you're travelling through them - you get home and wonder why you took this particular shot. I know why, I've done it!; when you're there, the sight is awe inspiring but the photo is just 2 dimensional and doesn't capture the greatness of the live scene. Matt is like the Rockies... You have to see him. He was the only one who got a standing ovation that night. Don't forget that the audience is not comprised of your average Joe coming in for a cool brew but is loaded with his peers, blues lovers, producers and all that's blues so they really honoured him with their hooting reaction. As much as I love SRV; I don't care for any bands that do his covers... they bore me as they're just 'wannabees'. I prefer originals with soul and Matt has all the soul he needs.

Oh and West to us Canadians includes everything from Vancouver to San Diego (sorry LindaH - Alaska is part of another country to us! * wink * )

 * smile * I'm at the airport in Charlotte NC with quite a few hours to kill... I'm exhausted and I can't wait to get home (well. to my other home at Pat's!) I think I'm getting too old for this...
