Where should we take our guests?

We have out of town visitors from Mars this weekend. We can only take in one social event. What would be the best demonstration of human cultural achievement to take them to?

The Red Square in Galway, Monroes Pub, a Pub in Schull.
The one in Marseille near the old port, the one in Cassis, there are a few nice one in Montreal too that they may like, they each have their own styles and are enjoyable to go to.

My nephew is coming to Cali in September & I'm gonna us him as an excuse to go to Disneyland to eat at the Blue Bayou.I wish that there were Cajun food restaurants near me.The closest I come to that,is the Popeyes a mile from here & the Blue Bayou 80 plus miles from here, in Orange County California.(pouting) hmmp!! * frown *

I hope not too many heads,my husband is such a jealous guy. * grin *

While in Galway you absolutely must take the martians for fish and chips at McDonagh's, simply the best fish and chips on the planet.

Don't be too impressed by my remembering the name of the Blue Bayou. I have some great memories of the place, and I also remember it because of the song. And I may live pretty far from Disneyland, but I've been there 5 or 6 times and I've studied Birnbaum's guide. I love the place! We're dying to go back again and to check out California Adventure. Have you been there yet?

You live on the coast, don't you? (Doesn't most of the population of Brazil?) Is the climate too warm for salmon and crab? Or doesn't the Atlantic have the same kind of goodies? Or aren't Brazilians into seafood?

I wasn't planning a trip to Alaska, but Pike Place Market in Seattle ships fresh seafood anywhere in the world, I think, if you have a serious craving. * smile *

Yeah,I've been to Disneyland quite a few times. Many times with my children when they were very little. Then everytime a relative would visit from home.Everyone from Hawaii always wants to go to Disneyland.I was the official tour guide. But remember now let me know if your ever in southern California.Okay??? * smile *

By the way I will be having some crab this weekend.Prepared Hawaiian style tho.I love sea food.I'm an islander, for gosh sakes,I eat all sorts of sea foods. My dad was a diver/fisherman during his spare time.Even had turtle when I was 5 years old.All I can remember was that the turtle cried when he was killed & the meat was better than steak.Haven't had it since.Nor do I ever want to ever again.Personally I think that crab tastes so much better than lobster. But thats just my opinion. * smile *

Yes, I live on the coast (more or less). Driving distance. But the water is too warm for "cold water" seafood. Have to import it from Argentina. Brazilians are into seafood in a big way along the coast, which there is a lot of. But in the interior, more difficult. Kinda like Illinois.

Me, sweet? I feel like I have been rather grouchy lately. Yes, part of my heritage is Irish, some generations back. I don't have all the family history. Anyway, I am pleased to heard I said the right thing at the right time...finally. Catch ya later, dear dabprovin. * smile *

(reply to Cleo) posted 23-Jul-2001 9:43am
 * smile * T'was a hard work week last week and I got into a discussion in one of the survey being a little bit grouchy and defensive about my position. Over-reaction to my pressures at work. But I had a very very nice weekend with the family and today (Monday) I am close to human. (I left my spleen at home so I wouldn't vent it at work today.)

BTW: Nice couch. * wink *
Cleo
(reply to Brian) posted 23-Jul-2001 10:18am
Yeah,I know what you mean.I get grumpy at times too,but my problem is, that I tend to take it out on my family when I get home from work.I don't know what makes me do that? Well,I hope your off to a better work week, after your venting.Believe it or not, many of us walk in your shoes daily so,just smile & take it stride.
Now is there anything else you wish to bring to light? Okay then. If that's all,we'll call it a session.I hate to rush you but your time is up,& I have another client waiting...... * smile *

BTW: I knew you'd like the couch,I had it imported from Italy last year,as the other was getting quite worn out.
Brian

I shall politely decline to inquire what caused the couch to get worn out in just one year.

The previous 2 clients simply required more visual assistance on my part, that I may better understand their dilemma.Shhhhh,I've already revealed too much. * smile *

Ahhh...the first to ask. My compliments on your acumen. Alas the time has come to make a decision. The aliens are waiting impatiently (with ray guns poised at my more sensitive areas.)

From all the delightful and persuasive discussions above, I think I shall follow the recommendation of ... jettles, who said:

"family event would probably be most like real interaction between earthlings"

And, if I might add, possibly the best demonstration of human cultural achievement.

Of all we have done, the most enduring and meaningful has been the establishment of family units. If we were a species of solitary creatures such as the shark, there would have been no need, requirement or interest to develop art, religion, governments, monuments, theme parks, pubs, ecological reserves, museums, dining out, sporting events, political debates and even Survey Central.

Thank you, jettles, for reminding me that the most important things are sometimes the ones we take most for granted.

 * laughing out loud * None of the above. Human culture. Is that like a bacterial culture? Human cultural achievement, hmmmmmmmmm. My guess is that it means we 'infect' or spread our culture to other petri dishes. So far our voyages into space are as close as we get.

I ended up going to Wreck Beach. It was really laid-back and pleasant. I wanted to go to the Chinese Garden, too, but I got kind of lost in the woods between the parking area and the beach (I parked way down on Old Marine Drive, then dove right into the woods), spent about an hour and a half walking around on and off little trails, and so when I was done at the beach it was time to head south again. Still, it was really really nice. I had never been to a "clothing optional beach" before, and thought it might be a little skanky and weird. It was just really mellow and nice. I was pretty amused that they were selling sunscreen for $2.00 an ounce, though. * smile *
Zang
(reply to Gamera) posted 5-Aug-2001 4:25pm
That's a Japanese garden. I assume you mean the one by Wreck, not the one I showed you in Chinatown. Yeah, Wreck is pretty mellow, and you can buy just about anything you might need. Does $2.00 an ounce seem that extravagant? I've never bought it before, I'm sure it is a lot cheaper at the drugstore, but you're paying for the convenience...
Gamera
(reply to Zang) posted 5-Aug-2001 10:23pm
I meant the Chinese Garden you had pointed out to me earlier. The Lonely Planet book you had said it was the nicest, most complete Chinese Garden one could see in any Western country, whereas I've been to other very nice Japanese style gardens in other places (still in the west though, sadly). I figured after the beach I would head back into China Town, but it got late and I didn't.

Yeah, $2 an ounce seems like the "gosh now that you're here and waggin' around all nekkid and stuff, I bet you would be willing to pay anything for a little protection" kind of price. It made me smile to see it, it seemed funny. In truth, I probably paid that much when I bought a bottle a week later at the Jalama Beach Store in Southern California- and that wasn't even clothing optional, just incredibly sunny.
