| ElvisFan67 | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 10-Jan-2004 3:49pm Yep--they're on my "Greatest Hits" CD. I also like "Whipped Cream" and "Mexican Shuffle". |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to ElvisFan67) posted 10-Jan-2004 6:05pm I have those too, but dont recall what they sound like at the moment. I just dug through my Beatles collection and found I don't have 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. I woke up dreaming that song, and jumped up like I'd run into a warning beacon. I spend too much time alone. That's got to change soon. I registered for school for the time being. |
| ElvisFan67 | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 10-Jan-2004 7:05pm I have a couple--no make that three--Beatles CDs, too, including "Sgt. Pepper". My favorite tracks of that one are "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "A Day in the Life". The other ones I have are "Meet the Beatles" and their Greatest Hits CD (I think it's their #1 hits). |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to ElvisFan67) posted 10-Jan-2004 8:28pm I had 'the Beatles with Tony Sheridan' when I was a kid - it predates titles listed as existing. I frisbeed it because at that age i couldn't believe that folks singing 'My Bonnie' and 'the Saints' were the same folks that did the White album i so enjoyed. |

| mello1 | posted 1-Feb-2004 7:14pm My five favorite have to be (in no order) Incubus, Nick Drake, Jack Johnson, John Mayer and Blind Melon. I love all these because they write (wrote) their own very good lyrics and they all have (had) an infinite amount of talent. Anyone disagree? |
| pandora | (reply to mello1) posted 1-Feb-2004 9:05pm That's a pretty good list, but I don't care much for John Mayer. |
| nasale | posted 3-Feb-2004 3:59pm There's no way I could name just five. I love all kinds of music (okay, with the exception of maybe rap, c&w). I've been through five decades of music. I love Motown music. (60's) I think Sarah Brightman is incredible. Just a couple of examples. |

| pandora | (reply to bombill) posted 6-Feb-2004 9:13am I've been on a huge Frank Black kick lately. Can't get enough. |
| bombill | posted 8-Feb-2004 4:10am Yea, he's the man. At first I listened to him just to fill the void the Pixies left, but then when he started changing his sound I was really upset about it. I loved the sound of Teenager of the Year and didn't want it any other way. I remember having two different cuts of "Men in Black," one from the Headache single and the other on Cult of Ray. I'd play it for others as a demonstration of how much he'd altered his sound. One day I play them for a friend who responds, "I don't know what your problem is, that second version really rocks." He was absolutely right. Die hard fan ever since. |
| pandora | (reply to bombill) posted 8-Feb-2004 12:10pm So far the only album I have is Teenager of the Year. Got a good recommendation for the next one to get? |
| bombill | posted 9-Feb-2004 1:54am His latest is really good, Show Me Your Tears. The songs are a little sadder, but he's really come a long way in the decade since Teenager. If you love the sound of Teenager, I recommend his debut self-titled album. |

Seriously (now that I'm done reflecting you), the Beatles were awesome, but there is new rock, just as good, built on the foundation they layed. Industrial was built revolution #9. With your list, I would have thought you'd moved onto Manson by now. The combination of oldies and violent bigotry suggests to me that your life is on insecure hold, bitterly divorced (part of the jerk concern), meaningless job, that sort of thing, and since you're probably only about 44, it's about time for a ressurrection of sorts to take advantage of the rest of life. I do it on a regular basis, going from software engineer to hitchhiker, changing gender, engaging in politics, becoming a guitar virtuoso, etc. If I weren't constantly learning fresh new worlds, I'd be on 'that' stairway to heaven too. |

| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Wolfnhiser55) posted 18-Feb-2004 6:51pm Dang, I just deleted a whole big blurb on my collection with histories of different genres, and lots to say about my own music. My oldies go back to the turn of the century, centuries before that, and to the corners of the earth. I grew up on euro-punk, ecclectic/experimental, and surf. Killer music takes advantage of grüngestalt, that's when the intensive peaks of a melody form a second tier of melody. I play a beatle bass (acoustic-electric ziolin-bass) in a slide-steel/sitar/piano style with both hands independently slide/hammering melodies. Punk and acid-metal ain't that different compared to microtonal techno or pentatonic irish ballads, and 40 years from now people won't even see the difference.
Here's a playlist I use for warm-ups: Addams Family - De Vol Sylvan Song - Heart Danse du Bonheur - John McLaughlin (Sakti album) European Mothers Son - Velvet Underground Shiek of Araby (banjo) - Paul Martin Out of Limits - Ventures Digital - Mia Doi Todd Cantaloop / Flip Fantasia - Us3 Slow Dive - Siouxsie and the Banshees Mendohlson Op. 64 - Leila Josefowicz (violin) Killer Queen - Queen (not great music, but a personal fave anyhow) Tocatta & Fugue in D minor (the vampire song) - Bach Organworks La Malaguena - Orizba & his orchestra So Low Blues - Sandy Owen Plastic Fantastic Lover - Jefferson Airplane the Sorcerors Apprentice - Dukas I Put a Spell on You - Marilyn Manson Midnight at the Oasis - Maria Muldaur (sweet killer guitar solos) the Sweet Postcard - 2 Nice Girls Sembung Gilang (javanese gamelan) - Saryabrata & D. Lewiston (requires playing notes between frets). I try to play along to a different genre on the radio everynight. I don't care for limitations, and everyone has something to teach. When I was a young punk, listening to disco was verboten. I didn't get a chance to listen to it for another two decades. Mainstream & counter-culture, just another culture. There was ignorance and innovation in both genre. It was something to do in hopes of having an identity. So what do you play? What new music do you listen to? Evanesence? Kanno? Not born in 1955 (now that logic is supplanting my intuition), then why the '55'? Rap makes sense in that until the mid 70's there were a lot of ballads in popular music. Someone had to fill that narrative gap. |

| SueBee | (reply to gord) posted 20-Aug-2004 12:58pm I probably would enjoy others like him, but haven't taken the time to listen to others. I love Wendy Carlos, but that's similar only in that it's all synthesized. Oh, one other comes to mind -- Mike Oldfield and Tubular Bells.
I'm working on learning to play Tocatta and Fugue on the organ (my synth has a great old church organ sound) but I'm self-taught and not used to reading bass clef for the left-hand part since I've usually just played chords.
