| thevelvetcure | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 21-Aug-2003 1:55pm Kristal_Rose, I agree whole heartedly, what defines a musician? This changes with every generation. I however failed to list Trent Reznor, he's a musical genius, he played every instrument in the studio when he produced his earlier albums and had to hire other musicians just so that he could tour. He has meaningful lyrics and you can relate to them (depending on the person). What in the world is wrong w/ Sinatra? Open your mind a bit, there's not just what you consider to be 'music.' out there in the world. Don't forget we are discussing music ARTISTS. Arlo Guthrie could captivate an audience w/ 20 minutes of ramblings and STILL have a message to it (Alice's Restaraunt). Jimi Hendrix played a right handed guitar upside down, and was a great lyricist (try listening to something other than the 'popular songs') such as 'The Wind Cries Mary' 'Castles Made of Sand' etc. No, he wasn't always tripped out. blah blah blah, i'm rambling. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 22-Aug-2003 12:33am My bro finally got me to listen to Yngwie Malstreem. He was a metal virtuoso in I think Rainbow or Alabaster. Anyhow, the guy simply flies in rapic classical melodies, bending each note on the way with expressive precision. He'd probably be playing the hollywood bowl if he hadn't landed in the wrong genre for that. It's one more reminder to myself that so much depends on marketing, something I am reluctant to touch. I do think their are 'excellent' and 'popular' musicians in any new genre. The former is from the skill of expression, the latter can merely be expressing a popular contemporory sentiment or marketing. Madonna started out as popular and learned the media of audio/video texture expression as she went along. I don't know it was her or her producers who chose to tie into into biology sounds like heart-beats. I imagine many musicians do that naturally without being aware of it. My last work recorded piece was based on EEG's. It was someething I planned to do later with equipment but accidentally found myself doing through string technique. The good stuff of many musicians gets buried. I prefer Hearts mandolin/dulcimer rennaissance bluegrass over the the 80's electro-pop where most 'music' has been stripped out. As my ear improves, I find out just how bad much of the stuff I loved 20 years ago was. Some of it stands the test of time, other stuff was simply too simple and repetitive, lacking any exquisite depth, but probably aligned with my concept of a fantasy date at the time and could be heard while working on cars. I recently got into Bach, and what that took was not asking the music to relate to anything in my life, or a view of the world I appreciate, and letting the music be entirely it's own universe instead. I was meditating on dance of the hours and realised it's grüngestalts mirror it's carrier melody, and then the two converge to be the same thing, like the the minutes hand catching up with the hour hand at midnight. I don't think many veteran composers who have had a lifetime to figure out stuff like this intersect with the popular 20 something crowd much, although many big rock old-timers move into producing. I suspect they pass on studio craft and marketing more than much else though. |

| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Wicksy) posted 29-Oct-2003 7:30pm I have seen them around in other surveys, and I think 'favorite music' just automatically serves as an all encompassing general survey for people to start with. It probably also shows up in search engines whenever someone tries to find downloads from their favorite band. I'm disapointed that the 'would you let your kindergartner wear a dress' survey finally bit the dust, not that it was an outstanding survey, but just because it had been a unique representative part of SC's quirky line of examination for so long. |
| LuridHope | (reply to Wicksy) posted 29-Oct-2003 11:32pm I agree, though I do not do this myself, I have thought of it, and I am sure that that it actually does go on. I'm saying that it is in fact going on here though. Hmm. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to LuridHope) posted 30-Oct-2003 1:29am Personally, I don't think surveys should ever be retired. Why have several surveys all about the same subject. New surveys are rarely improvements. It makes more sense to scroll through a survey than dig up several old surveys to see what people say on a subject. Well, I did think up one reason - to allow new users an opportunity to create surveys. |

| OfTheSoul | posted 3-Nov-2003 6:15am Does this survey get the record for longevity? Like a couple of other die-hards, I wonder what keeps these few old surveys active... Favorite artist...hm...difficult to pin down to one. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to OfTheSoul) posted 3-Nov-2003 3:36pm By no means, this only a 2001. The survey 'Would you let your kindergartner wear a dress to school on the first day' lasted much longer. As I said above, I think this one draws an audience from web searchers seeking music. |
| OfTheSoul | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 3-Nov-2003 4:13pm Ah, good surmising, probably very true! Hey, we could drum up some business for Bill this way--by creating surveys in which the subjects have definitive Internet followings! I'm off to create one now. I'm figuring something like this: "Do you think, 'Come see my pics through my Webcam--I've been naughty, naughty' is inviting enough to have a good turnout for my bowling tourney this weekend?" That should draw a thing or two... |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to OfTheSoul) posted 3-Nov-2003 5:05pm Seriously, about a fourth of my web research (which occurs nearly every other day) lists my site and SC from comments I have made. Apparently a lot of my vocabulary and interests are fairly unique. My favorite though was the time I searched for 'God' and my home-page showed up first in the search listing. I think the only thing you'll draw here are people looking up 'tourney'. It's like my use of 'orery'. |
| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 3-Nov-2003 5:31pm I always get a lot of SC stuff too, but i thought it was because Google uses your cookies to find out what sites are likely to interest you most. Also, I think Bill stopped SC getting submitted to search engines about a year ago... |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Biggles) posted 3-Nov-2003 7:03pm Oh, I use a rare search engine, but the same notion occurred to me. The pages that appear are usually old ones, now that i think about it. |

Van Halen--Classic straight-through hard rock, even still bearable in transition Beatles: Historic with an amazing history Stones: Respectable, die-hard men; except their music never turned me on--at all; ironically, there is this one song they do that has always been about my most favorite tune, though..."You cayan't alwees git whut cha wo-u-oont..."--great friggin' tune! |
| cerealkiller | (reply to OfTheSoul) posted 6-Nov-2003 2:17pm So I was typing too fast and missed the "a", joker yourself. What does "even still bearable in transition" supposed to mean? My choices are only a few of what I love, I've been around a lot longer than most of you. I was in grade school when the Beatles hit. You're free to comment I guess but I didn't ask for a commentary on my music choices. Let's see, I also like Johnny Mathis, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge, Guess Who, Foreigner, Prince, Led Zeppelin and Doris Day. What review do you have on those, Mr. Music? |
| OfTheSoul | (reply to cerealkiller) posted 6-Nov-2003 8:16pm Johnny Mathis - what a vibrato Iron Butterfly - one of the "unsung" forefathers of true heavy rock Vanilla Fudge - a bit bubble-gummy Guess Who - "These eyes...cry every ni-hight! (I refuse--not in this company) Led Zepplin - only one behind Hendrix in fathering HM, but in a blues class of their own Doris Day - "Que Sera Ser-Vomito!" Meaning: "even still bearable in transition" = they could still be digested, even while they were with Hagar. |
