I was littler so it's hard to judge properly, but I would say about a foot.

Wow, Ive heard they can grow big, but I've never seen one larger than 10cm except unless some of those koi were fakes. I forgot who who ginger was by the time you commented, so I was envisioning a rattie and wondered with or without tail, the latter being rather big for a domestic.

I've had a couple of rats that would have been close to a foot without the tail - 10 inches certainly. Ginger was a monster fish - he lived in the pond for the later years of his life so got fat on tadpoles and beetle and fly larvae.

Yep yep, working her way up to having Nessie as an afternon snack, and Nessie tourists of course. I'm sure she'd recognize and spare you though (even if you are really a tree-frog).
Are you on summer break

I always thought of Ginger as male, even though I had no way to sex him. Probably because he was named after a (male) character from the Biggles books.

I'm sort of on summer break. I had to stay after term ended to do exams and then another 4 weeks working on a project. But then my project supervisor went to Tanzania so there was no point me staying and I went to Sheffield for about 4 weeks. Now I'm back in Oxford - so on "holiday" but working for the next 6 weeks.

Penfold the hamster
Neville the hamster
Seymour the guinea pig
Tara the dog

There have been others, but they were more family pets than mine.

I have dogs called Rupert and Jess and 5 goldfish all called Tim (can't tell them apart so it seemed sensible). My favourite horse was called Dante, but the one I looked after and enjoyed calling from across a field was called Timber.

A family I babysit for has a budgie. I think they're similar to, or maybe the same as parakeets.

Ah yes, I recall the Monty Python skit on the book 'How to keep your budgie down'. basically, all you have to do is hit him with the book.
I have singing conversations with the neighbors parrot when taking a shower.

Monty Python has never been my cup of tea, but that's funny! Do you have meowing conversations with cats too?

Odd - to me these are parakeets:

I'm sure they're closely related, but not quite the same thing.

Aha:

"Budgies are commonly referred to as parakeets but the word parakeet actually describes any small parrot-like bird with a long tail. The term budgie was derived from the word budgerigar, which is based on a similar sounding Aborigine phrase that means, "good eating" and refers specifically to the species Melopsittacus Undulatus."

The last picture you posted does not look like any bird I have ever seen.

I wonder if the "good eating" thing refers to people eating the birds or the birds eat a lot? If it is that they taste good you would have to eat a lot of them to fill your belly * grin *

We don't have many parakeets in the UK either (although there are flocks in parts of southern England!) * smile *

That link you posted is interesting, there used to be someone here at SC called lisashea. I think.

Yes of course. Too be honest, th bird seems to be a better verbal communicator. Our conversations resemble those logic tests where one figures out which glyph goes next in sequence. He seems to speak in verbs and emotions. Think of bird movements set to sounds, stretching, diving, pulsing, etc. I had one cat that in his later years sounded very human and scared guests, but we couldn't make out a single thing he was saying.

Your first photo resembles parakeets sold in California. You sure those second ones aren't lorikeets or something, or were those budgies? Those 2nd ones also resemble half-moon dwarf parrots sold here, though I haven't seen them with blue faces.

Wonderful description. My cats seem to respond appropriately most of the time. I don't speak harshly to them, but they react accordingly when I ask them not to do something.

With the cats, I get better success using telepathy. Most of the blatant conversation centers around play. I take them for moonlight walks.

What are your kitties' names?

(reply to pandora) posted 23-Aug-2004 6:16pm
Volty (Voltaire), my fretful kid circus cat, and Schizzy (Schism (faction of a church)) my wise zen cat. They are gray tabby litter-mate brothers, roughly 7 years old now.

I always think it's nice when sibling kitties can stay together. I think one of our cats is emotionally disturbed because when she was very tiny, her mother got carried away by an owl. If she's asking for attention and doesn't get it, she'll go and knock something over.

We only have them in pet shops as far as I know. I have seen a few in the wild that I figured had escaped.

I think all cats do that. They also have a keen sense for the emotional worth of objects, and the destruction is in proportion to the neglect. Beyond that, they have a sense of psychic energy in objects, and will sleep on whatever contains the most personal energy, even if it's something that just arrived. They know the difference between a personal heirloom and a disposable factory item.
I got them at the pound as kittens. I think they at least have a sister, but I could only support a pair. I'm sure their sister got a good home too. Everyone loves kittens. I picked the feisty ones who licked each other. They fight too though.

So true. I can see a difference in her, between playing with non-cat toys that are invaluable to me, and then she gets a look, and knocks something important to me to the floor.

My bed is also my desk and where things from my excursions get dumped, so the cats always have something to lie on. Back in my painting days it was tough to keep my prior cats off of what I was warking on at the moment. I painted one of my cats though (from a photo), and he disappeared permanently.

Happy belated b-day. These profiles are useful. I didn't realize you were glitterbits. nice photo.

Hey, thanks! I like your pic too. I love getting a little glimpse into someone's home. It's funny that your birthday is March 23rd. I had a vision that I would give birth on 3/23. Looks like it's not going to happen in 2005, but maybe another year.

I read you email a few minutes ago. Last you emailed me, you were working on knitting a baby blanket and inquiring about baby souls.

Oh man, that's right. I couldn't remember if I had actually sent that or not. I gave up the knitting because it was causing me too much stress. Been reading a very interesting book called Soul Trek though, about spiritual meeting before birth or even conception.

Knitting caused you stress?? Was it avoidance of something you should have been working on?

(reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 24-Aug-2004 6:42pm
It was peaceful for me at first, but the longer I worked on it, the harder it got. It made it hard to ignore the fact that I might never have a child.
