| moviesnob | (reply to mandy) posted 13-Apr-2004 1:36am I just never got the appeal of Clockwork Orange. Never jived for me. Fight Club, however, gets Honorable Mention in my Top Five. It was in my Top Five for a while, but Carlito's Way edged it out. I never saw The Crow (it's on my list!) and I didn't much care for Apocalypse Now. I'll add Kissed and Boxing Helena to my list since it's on your Top Five.

| Pomeranian | (reply to moviesnob) posted 13-Apr-2004 4:56am Fox and His Friends - Fassbinder directed and also performed the lead as the ironically named Fox, a carnival worker who wins the lottery and is used up by his new bourgeois friends.
Polyester - I think of this as John Water's Job story; Divine stars as an extremely put-upon suburban housewife. A twisted homage to Douglas Sirk (long before Todd Haynes' "Far From Heaven"). |

The Ten Commandments was good, the actors--Yul Brynner (Spelling?) was great and one handsome dude back then. Who was the actor that played Moses? I can see the face but the name escapes me. Was it Burt Lancaster? |

Trainspoting Madness of King George Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Essex Boys I'm also a huge fan of long, historical epics, like Gladiator, Vercingetorix (I saw the whole movie - on fastforward though - despite the fact that it sucked so badly), Attila the Prince of Huns, etc. |
| Iseult | (reply to Irene007) posted 13-Apr-2004 6:02pm Requiem for a Dream is one of the movies that recieved virtually no advertisement (I happened to know about it when it came out because I walked passed a local movie theatre and saw its poster) and still everyone knows about it and everyone saw it. |
| Irene007 | (reply to moviesnob) posted 13-Apr-2004 6:55pm Vanilla Sky? The one with Tom Cruise? I didn't see it - didn't hear enough about it to want to rent it but if you're making a vague parallel with Jacob's Ladder; you've just peeked my interest! |
| Irene007 | (reply to Iseult) posted 13-Apr-2004 7:02pm It's true what you say about the lack of advertisement for that film - it was good enough to just go along with the word of mouth! I saw the movie right after, what I thought was a really good movie about drugs; "Traffic" I liked the way the scenes in NY were filmed with a blue filter and the scenes in Mexico filmed with an orange filter. What I didn't like was the choice of "sweet little girl corrupted by the drug trade" to illustrate the movie's point. It wasn't credible. But Requiem for a Dream was shockingly real - the young woman convincing herself the she was not addicted and yet went pretty low just to get her fix - that seemed much more real! I liked the way they filmed the effects of getting high too - the close up of the dilating eye, pill popping and etc.. It was a really good movie and had a stronger impact on the cause and dangers of drug addiction. |

| Irene007 | (reply to Iseult) posted 14-Apr-2004 11:45pm Requiem for a Dream does rate among my favourites... For many reasons; the story, the effects, the poignancy, the sadness, the hurt, the harm of addiction. It must certainly have struck a cord in many people... I hope it was a positive influence. Just Married Independence Day Thirteen Ghosts The Ring Mermaids I'm a big horror fan, so that's why you see the Ring and 13 Ghosts. I think Just Married is so hilarious. Looking through other people's lists, I see ones that I love that I forgot about, such as the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Labyrinth. I'm sure I'll think about many more, but that's just what popped in mind right away. |
| autumnlight | (reply to they) posted 20-Apr-2004 7:54pm I absolutely adore Tim Burton and I loved Sleepy Hollow (presence of Johnny Depp helps). There's just something so clever about the way he explores the world of the weird without making it pathetic and cliche. I think he's a genius!
