| dab | (reply to bill) posted 2-Jul-2002 12:48pm Mmmmm, pumpkin pie. Mmmmm, donuts. Lavender is okay. I said pumpkin pie also because it's so easy to make. |

| bill | (reply to dab) posted 3-Jul-2002 2:13pm I suspect there are a lot of things that are easy to make, though, I know of several things that are not. Perhaps it's a perspective thing (easy for some, hard for others). Do you make the filling and pie dough from scratch? If so, that sounds a bit hard to me. ...of course, you can buy pie-dough and filling in a can and it still tastes pretty good in the end. |
| bill | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 3-Jul-2002 2:13pm Honestly, it sounds like bunk to me... but it's fun to talk about. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to bill) posted 3-Jul-2002 2:20pm I can't argue with that. I wonder how the candy Good & Plenty was selected in the first place. |

| natsim | (reply to bill) posted 3-Jul-2002 6:37pm Ahhh.... it might be the same as what we call licorice allsorts. I can't imagine why the smell of that would be a turn-on... |

| SueBee | (reply to natsim) posted 4-Jul-2002 5:33pm The differences we have within the same language fascinate and amuse me. Have you ever been to San Antonio before? I lived there for a couple years in the mid-80's. If you have a chance, be sure to visit the River Walk downtown. It is really quite beautiful, and there are lots of great restaurants. If you like historic stuff, the Alamo is there, but I wasn't really very impressed with that. |
| SueBee | (reply to Cleo) posted 4-Jul-2002 5:36pm Yum! Save me a spot next to you! Good food and good company! I'm sure we can bring the Miso soup, chop sticks, and green tea, but I'd rather just sip the soup and tea from a cup. |

I'm really looking forward to going to the River Walk. Apparently there's also a few good museums with displays on Mexican / Native American / African American art and culture in the area. I think that would be interesting too. I'm trying to work out whether to take some time off while I'm there.... these conference trips are always really rushed. |

| SueBee | (reply to natsim) posted 5-Jul-2002 12:10am I hope you have a wonderful time! Do you usually enjoy the work-related part of the conferences? Do you attend lectures, or give them? Or is it more of a group sharing thing? |
| natsim | (reply to SueBee) posted 5-Jul-2002 12:44am I really enjoy my work conferences. The American meeting is always massive - about 2000 people. What usually happens is we all submit short summaries of our work in June, and they are assessed by small committees, and the best work is given as short lectures, so it's a good time to catch up on all of the new work in the field (and to catch up with old friends!). I'm very excited, because I'm giving two talks this year! It's a big honour, and it means that my research must be on the right track. |
| SueBee | (reply to natsim) posted 5-Jul-2002 2:33pm That's very admirable. You should be proud of yourself for doing good work that can really make a difference in the world. I'm counting on you to have a breakthrough so I don't end up all hunched over from osteoporosis when I'm old! |

| Cleo | (reply to natsim) posted 13-Jul-2002 11:55pm I've had Licorice Allsorts (Biggles sent me an assortment of candies from Great Britain,a few moths ago) & Allsorts was one of the candies she sent. I loved it cause it tasted kinda like the Good & Plenty candies here. Cept the Allsorts are softer. The Good & Plenty looks like pink & white capsules. The licorice in the Good & Plenty is very tiny as compared to the Allsorts. I liked your Allsorts cause I LOVE licorice. A Rhubarb Sherbert? Yum!! & a couple more candies (can't think of their names right now) I'd love to send you some American candies. Do you like chocolates or hard fruity candies better? Let me know what your preference is & I'll send you some. I'll send a mixture of both if you like. Both Biggles & Wiccawillow have sampled some of the American candies here.Biggles says that our chocolates are a bit to salty for her taste. But let me know okay? It's no problem really, I'd love for you to sample some of our American candies. |

| Cleo | (reply to SueBee) posted 15-Jul-2002 5:06am I've never used a wooden bowl to make sushi before & I've been making sushi for at least 30 years now. **scratches her head** I really don't understand the concept of using a wooden bowl tho, other than the fact that, maybe it cools the rice quicker or something, or makes it more authentic & all. I gotta ask my girl friend in Hawaii about that. Locals use what ever bowl they have on hand. Maybe the restaurants use them but, I've never seen a local using it. I do have a huge wooden bowl that I've used only a few times. Would you like it? I'll send it to you. It's not brand spanking new or anything but, it's not all worn & falling apart or anything. It's still pretty! & why haven't you used you sushi mat yet?? It's waisting way! Do you know how to use a sushi mat? It would be a lot easier if you took 2 or 3 tiny itty bitty nails & nailed the top end of the mat to a wooden cutting board. That way the mate will stay still when you roll the sushi up. Okay I'm hungry now. BTW 2 nights ago I made Miso Chicken. It was pretty tasty & I thought about you guys when I ate it. |

| SueBee | (reply to Cleo) posted 16-Jul-2002 11:05pm Well, that figures! I saw it on a cooking show called East Meets West. Ming (the host) says you really should use a wooden bowl to get the rice the right consistency. Something about the way the wood will soak up some of the moisture, but not let the rice dry out. It seemed logical, but if you and others manage without one, I guess I won't worry about it! Thanks for the tip! It's so very sweet of you to offer us your bowl, but I would feel bad taking it. And besides, maybe we don't need one. I'll just try a regular bowl and see how it works. Mandy is low-carbing, so she won't be eating rice any time soon. Thanks anyway, though -- you are too kind, dear! Nailing the sushi mat down is a great idea! The guys on TV always make it look so easy, but I can just see myself wishing I had three more hands, rice and seaweed flying all over the kitchen! |

| Cleo | (reply to SueBee) posted 17-Jul-2002 2:08am I was talking to my best friend in Honolulu yesterday & she & my oldest daughter are coming to California on Labor Day. My daughter (Yardley)is staying for a month. My girlfriend( Debbie)is staying for 3 months. Yay! We have much to catch up on. I've know her since I was 13 years old. Her birthday is next week Wednesday & she's a LEO. We're going to be celebrateing our 50th birthdays together. Can you believe it??? Who would've know she & I would be celebrating our 50th birthday together. WOW!!! I'm so tripping out on this. Anyway's, what I was getting at was that, she's bringing a lot of local Hawaiian taste treats for my/our birthday.I asked her to buy me a sushi & she said she had an extra one.YAY! Darn it!! I totally forgot to ask her about the wooden bowl thing. She does sushi & other authentic Japanese dishes like a pro. WAY better than me. Now that I think about it,she cooks ALL the ethnic Hawaii dishes better than me. She does Filipino,Chinese,Hawaiian & Portuguese dishes too. I can hardly wait for her to get here & spoil me with her cooking. Oh! She's also bring some sushi modes. It pre-forms the sushi into a triangle shape & you push it out when it's formed. It's kinda difficult to explain right now. Would you like one of those too?? I'll ask her to get you one, before she comes. It's not a problem, really. She would be more than happy to do it. Umm! & if you need an authentic wooden bowl, tell me know. I'll ask her for that too. Is there ANYTHING, anything at all, that you might want or need for your sushi entertaining, Sue? They have ALL that stuff in the local grocery stores in Honolulu. Well,if you think of anything, let me know before September 2nd. |
| SueBee | (reply to Cleo) posted 19-Jul-2002 1:37pm Wow! I'm so happy for you getting to see your best friend and daughter!! I've known my best friend since we were 12 and she's a Leo, too!! Thanks for the offer, but I can't imagine what else I would need. I don't think I'll be getting into it so much to need a bunch of other special tools and things. Your favorite recipes would be good! I already have some recipes, but yours might be better. Our local grocery store is now advertising Frushi. It's sushi made with fruit. Sounds kind of strange to me. I don't know if I'll be brave enough to try it. Have you ever heard of that? |
| Cleo | (reply to SueBee) posted 19-Jul-2002 5:13pm For my Maki sushi,I cheat a little,I use the packet mix of(vinegar & sugar)The pro's use the real vinegar & sugar.I never got the hang of that. But Debbie can do it like that. Not me! I have some jullian cut carrots, & (if you can find it) watercress. Blanch them for a couple minutes in hot water till just a little wilted. Then I put a can of tuna (drained) & put a little of the left over sushi mixture in a bowl & mix it together. Scramble an egg up & fry it like a pancake. Slice that into thin strips & put all the ingredients on the rice & roll don't use too much rice if you want it to be more meatier with the filling. But when you do put the rice on the seaweed paper don't put it clear up to the top or dead center. You'll have to experiment with it a couple of time to get the right look. I'll see if I can find you a good sushi making book. As for the Frushi. Is it rolled in rice & seaweed paper? Or Egg? Please elaborate. I use a package mix for the Abrage sushi. That's a light brown looking cone shaped sushi. It's made out of deep fried tofu.I don't think the have it just anywhere. But in Hawaii it's everywhere. You mix the rice with this packet & thinly sliced carrots & green beans.I REALLY love this one. |
| SueBee | (reply to Cleo) posted 20-Jul-2002 7:20pm Yummy!! The Frushi is rolled in rice & seaweed paper. I'm thinking they must use a different flavoring for the rice. I guess I'll just have to break down and try it. |
