I could not possibly care any less than I do at this very moment if they raise it or not. ***reality: Well, the reason we (or anybody) cares is that it's a fascinating story that absolutely rocked the world at the time. The largest ocean liner ever, launched under the very loud proclamation that it was brilliantly designed in such a way that it could not possibly ever sink, never ever ever. And then it sank! On it's maiden voyage, no less! The whole world was in a state of absolute shock and horror. It's arguably the most historically significant sunken ship in world history. If you think of it as just another shipwreck, I think you're missing the bigger historical picture. Don't expect the movie to paint that picture for you, btw; try the local library for that. Contemporary news reports might help to impress its significance on you. Or maybe not. But Titanic was "any old sunken ship" like Pearl Harbor was "any old bombing run". Doesn't make it worth the trouble of raising it, however. | What do you think of the recent efforts to raise part of the hull of the TITANIC?
In 1988 I had already made the biggest mistake of my life, so I'm not sure I'd have anything useful to tell myself. | If it were possible right this moment to send a message into the past to yourself, would you do it?
582. I see no real reason to go back and respond to all the old surveys; who's going to read them? However, I do refer back to old surveys when I have a survey idea and I want to make sure it hasn't been done before. If it has, and the survey looks particularly good, sometimes I'll answer it. | How many surveys have you not yet answered?
My housemate and I share a fridge, so I'm only counting what belongs to me. I believe there are currently two beers in there. That's it. | How full of food is your refrigerator?
I'm not convinced that the thing it means is existant, but the word means something to me. How clear, specific, and unambiguous it is, that's open to debate. If you mean do I have a clear mental image of a large white guy with a snowy beard, up in clouds with a big book of who's been naughty and nice (or the equivalent supreme sentient from the religion of your choice) the answer would be no. If you mean do I understand a basic concept which involves a life force which is responsible for the existence of everything, then yes I suppose I'm at least that clear on the idea. I don't necessarily buy into it, but I'm not unfamiliar with the word. ***Lorax: I don't know, Nick is pretty complex... ***gilly: I was reading about circumcision the other day and noticed the "G-d" convention which you have also used here. Not to get too far off-topic, but could you maybe explain the reasoning behind that? Why would an omniscient/omnipotent being care about something so seemingly picayune as whether you spelled out the word in it's entirety? (I hope that didn't sound disrespectful, my curiosity is sincere) ***gilly: So would you say that the examples you cited are more a human convention designed to reduce the possibility of offense, as opposed to a divine law? It makes sense to me when I think of it that way. | The word "God":
I was going to count "The Star-Spangled Banner", but then I realized I only know the first verse, and there are like seventy of them, each more metrically painful than the last. | How many poems can you recite from memory in their entirety?
I assume you mean while I'm on earth... | How much do you weigh?
Of course, this question works even better when one of the options is gold... | Which weights more, a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks?
Although Monica's dress hardly qualifies as "international politics", unless you count the fact that the rest of the world is laughing at us right now. ***lisashea: Yeah, I kinda left myself an out for that particular angle. | Do you know what's happening in International politics?
Although it's almost a line from the cover of a Zappa album. "Weasels Ripped My Flesh...RSS!" Okay, maybe not. ***daver: Don't you listen to Billy Joel? Only the good die young... | Do your initials spell out a word?
