11I like emoticons as : ) and such but not the graphics because they seem too "loud". I've been on the net since I was 6 and learned at an early age that I could be misunderstood if I didn't try to convey the emotion behind my words. On here I was laughed at for using them too much and consciously cut down, but I think that resulted in people mistaking my intentions in several cases. I think often they are the only way to make it clear what the emotion behind the thought was.How do you feel about those smiley faces everyone sticks on the end of sentences?
12I use them in debates because while some people debate to "drive home a point", I am always doing it in a light-hearted manner. I debate with friends over wine where we're all laughing. I want to let the person talking with me know that, while I am presenting another view, I am not "stern" about it but am "playful". Sadly, from your comments, this was not conveyed properly. I would never, ever, have a "Ha you're wrong" attitude, period. I would have thought you'd have known that about me ... I don't think there IS a universal wrong or right.

As to 6 yr old, that was simply to explain why they are so ingrained in my speech patterns - it was very, very early on in my communication development. It had NOTHING to do with "more right/less right".

14This is tough - I've only hated 2 or 3 people and they are still hated for strong personal reasons. I have never "stopped hating" someone, although I may forgive him or her. I did dislike some traits of my current SO when we were just friends, but other traits of his made up for the ones I disliked. Good options. I will find these much more revealing than just a yes or no.Have you ever ended up having a romantic or sexual relationship with someone you previously hated?

17I liked them - we went every once in a while. We have pretty good RollerBlades and use them when we can, but it's hard finding a good, lightly-used place to ride them. Plus in New England there aren't a lot of months to use them in. Mostly we take them to my SO's work parking lot and roll around in it. It'd be nice if they had rinks we could use them in, maybe even tracks with jumps and stuff.Roller Skating Rinks . . .. .
18Yes, but not by itself. I think on a lot of questions it's unreasonable to answer only "yes" or "no". I love debating philosophy and there simply aren't yes and no answers, or if you did answer that way it is meaningless. I think saying "most of the time this but sometimes that" or "I would consider Z in emergencies" is quite valid and more interesting than dropping a peanut into one bucket or another. Is "it depends" a reasonable answer to a survey?
19Bill: I agree that if someone has checked 'it depends' that there wasn't an adequate option on the original survey. On the ones that give a good range of answers, say Jen's prom survey, I doubt many people would have clicked 'it depends'. If a survey only had "yes all the time" and "no never", I imagine quite a few would go for the "sometimes" meaning of "it depends". People complain if surveys have more than 20 answers, so there will always be a few people that have to fall into a "it depends" rather than list every single permutation. I think the number of "it depends" answers indicates how well the choices given reflected the views of people here, though. Is "it depends" a reasonable answer to a survey?
20Thank you for the ranking comment, that usually confuses people (which end is 'best'). I believe hanging was always the "most humane" because it snapped the neck immediately - it didn't really strangle the person. Most people think it's "icky" now. Firing squad is probably second for immediacy, but it involves other people doing the act which again most people squirm away from. Many just want the criminal to 'die', not for us really to 'kill' him.

Good survey, and I can identify the author by the i-s :)
