| 40 | steve, basing one's disbelief in free will on the deterministic nature of the universe has one small problem - the universe, as described by quantum mechanics (possibly the most successfully proved and practically useful model of the universe we have developed to date), is most assuredly *non-deterministic*! I suggest that anyone believing otherwise go back and restudy their post-1940s physics. I agree with phi that Sir Penrose's attempts to tie quantum indeterminism into the mechanisms of conciousness are somewhat labored, but that's probably because a) he's a mathematician, not a trained neurologist (although both his 'rents are doctors), and b) he persists in the belief, like most of the other intellectuals of this age, that consciousness is somehow "created" by neural firing sequences in the brain. I would not be suprised if biologists of the future will consider this belief as quaint as one which would have blood "originating" from the heart, or illness from an imbalance of the four bodily humours. My personal suspicion is that the nervous system is much more akin to a tranceiver of consciousness, rather than a simple emmitter. | Which of the following statements do you believe are true ? |
