Wow. I'm really stunned at the degree to which using the words "husband" and "wife" have blinded people to what I wrote. I think I'll wait six months and ask essentially the same question using "maid" and "butler" or something and see how the responses differ. I love people; people are wacky! :) | Would you rather have a "husband" or a "wife"? Which would you rather be?
But I'm not making gender assignments...you are. I don't consider the words wife and husband to be necessarily gender specific, as most of you apparently do. I'm not upset about that. I realize that if I want to get at what I was interested in asking, I'll have to do the survey very differently, but I think it'll be better to wait and do it later. | Would you rather have a "husband" or a "wife"? | 43 | Generally I avoid the beach when I want to recreate, since sand and salt and sun aren't particular faves. All but one of the times I've been to a beach in the last few years have been at night, for bonfires, and I haven't been in the water at all. I can't remember the last time I did more than wade in salt water. | Rank how long you spend on these activities when at the beach
When I am optimistic, I genuinely feel that way. There are times that I don't feel optimistic and I don't express optimism, although I try to be sufficiently self-aware to note that the probable outcomes haven't changed, only my attitude about them. I'm intensely cynical, but that doesn't prevent me from being fairly upbeat. | Optimism - genuine or pretense?
Just reading this survey made me ache all over. | Are you in any sort of pain at the moment?
I like my full name. I don't use my first name and plan to drop it when I marry, but it's served me well. | Are you happy with your name?
dysko: call your local city hall and ask for the office of the clerk or registrar and they will be able to tell you the specific rules and fees that apply--in the US it's generally ~$50 and some forms to fill out. | Are you happy with your name?
As I think I've mentioned elsewhere, I want to name my first child Alexander/ra. Since it's looking likely the child won't carry my last name, that will probably be the middle name. It's a family name (my grandfather's older brother) and, had I been a boy, they would have named me Alexander. From the time I heard this story I said "Why didn't you just name me Alexandra," since Alex would have been a really good name for me, and my mother has said "That's no name for a girl baby." I beg to differ and will use it, regardless of the sex of my first child. If the second child is a boy, we're talking about Christopher (Jason's middle name, which he's planning to drop in favor of Hunter when we marry) Brandon, which happens to also be the name of the good guy who marries Marianne in Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility, one of my favorite books. Other girl names I like include Aurora (the real name of the author, Georges Sand, as well as Sleeping Beauty's name in Disney's version of the tale) and Kate (because "all dainties are Kates"). For boys, I've been leaning lately toward Scott, the middle name of my best friend. Mostly I like fairly traditional names that won't require a lot of spelling and explanation throughout their lives. I like using family names as middle names, so McKenzie and Donovan are also in the running. Of course, all this could be moot, since I don't actually have any kids as yet. | How would you choose a name?
I've had two close friends get cancer. One survived a nasty bout of Hodgkins' lymphoma. The other died of brain tumors. My second cousin's wife is battling breast cancer in her 70's, but I haven't seen her since she's been ill, so I'm not very aware of it. To my knowledge, no one in my extended family has ever had cancer. We tend to die in our sleep of sudden strokes, which I think is a lovely way to go. | Cancer
I rent the basement of a house. I have always rented parts of houses...I kind of loathe apartment buildings. I live in Berkeley, which is either a city or a suburb, depending on your perspective. | In what kind of setting do you live?
