31No, but I'd love to. My parents have done it a few times on vacations and loved it. Have you ever ridden in a helicopter?
32I'd take $3 million for my left index finger. I'd probably take the $250K for either pinkie and $1 million for my right ring finger or left middle finger. You can't have a thumb or my right index/middle fingers or my left ring finger (got plans for that one). Would you let me cut off your index finger in a hospital setting for $250,000?
33In my work life, I feel kind of odd about the appreciation level. People tend to really appreciate and find desperately important and helpful, things that don't take very much effort from me. I tend to slack a fair amount, but my bosses still give me raises and make extravagant statements about the centrality of my function in their lives. It's both gratifying and odd, but makes me feel that I have successfully hit a balance where I'm providing a much needed service by effort that doesn't require major stress on my part and provides a more-than-adequate salary and perks. How well are you appreciated?
34Pandora, you have a number of interesting qualities, and I haven't even met you or interacted with you much. You are articulate and have considered opinions. You care passionately about your brothers & sisters and defend them heatedly. You have told us about taking control of your life, getting jobs and a car and finding ways to continue your education. Everything I know about you indicates that you are a lovable and capable person. Those are all pretty interesting and admirable qualities. How well are you appreciated?
35Bill, you know I disagree with you completely. I think *you* disagree with yourself to some degree and are simply trying on a new cynicism. How well are you appreciated?
36Not really. I listen to Sarah & Vinnie on Alice, but they're not really "talk radio" as I understand the term. They talk, they play games, they take callers, they play a tune, they do some ads, they report news & traffic, they talk, etc. Do you listen to talk radio?
37Dr. Laura seems to be pandering to people who want someone to tell them what to do and to act out the voice in their heads that tells them they are worthless idiots. From what I've read, she's quite the hypocrite and a fairly callous person to be anywhere around, but perhaps it's true that those who can't do, teach. I don't find belittlement either helpful or entertaining. Do you listen to talk radio?
38I'm interested in a particular set of household functions. I understand that no one's household is run precisely like this and most probably vary widely. The question is, if these were "jobs" within the household and you had to be one or the other, regardless of your sex, which would you rather be and which would you rather have? Pandora, is that clearer?Would you rather have a "husband" or a "wife"? Which would you rather be?
39No, but thanks for the suggestion.

After reading more comments, what I think people are missing is that I wasn't suggesting reciprocality. That is, if you said you'd rather have a "wife," that doesn't mean you then have to be a "husband," just that you don't have to deal with the stuff the "wife" is responsible for, and vice versa.

Topper, I think you make a very good point and one that's becoming clear to me, that these words are too loaded for people to think of them out of the context of a partnership.

In many ways, my job as a personal assistant reminds me of the traditional "wife" roles (without having to think of England :)), so perhaps that's why it's more comfortable to me. Or perhaps it's just that my parents have a fairly traditional and very happy relationship, so I don't fear/loathe traditional gender roles as much as some people do.

Very sorry if I pushed people's buttons with this.
Would you rather have a "husband" or a "wife"? Which would you rather be?
40There are many potential aspects of a marital relationship that I did not include here, because I am not addressing a marital relationship. Would you rather have a "husband" or a "wife"? Which would you rather be?
