41My current thinking about this is that a sufficiently powerful media image can serve as a focus for violence that would otherwise ground out elsewhere... I don't think it affects the sheer amount of violent crime, but it probably affects the distribution pattern. So in principle, banning those images might have a useful effect, but in general I don't think my country is mature enough to ban symbolic activities responsibly, so I'd rather we not do it at all.Do violent videos trigger off "copy cat" crimes ?
42we already have...When will intelligent machines become the rulers on Earth?
43supplicant - I enjoy your faith in human nature, but think it's naive. When you put it the way you did, it sounds obvious, but I can easily see situations where it doesn't occur to people that what they are building is a "weapon" that could turn on them. I'd be willing to bet that most of the computer viruses in current circulation don't have a "don't infect my own machine" clause built into them -- I suspect the same kind of blind spot could easily infect weapons-design teams playing on the cutting edge of computer technology. When will intelligent machines become the rulers on Earth?
44Nope.
If it's really a case of "caught" -- that is, it would be in some way bad for someone to see us -- it's actively a turnoff... I get nervous, which interferes with both my enjoyment and my concentration.
If (more likely) it's just a case of "walked in on" then I don't much care.
While having sex is it a turn on for you if there is a risk of getting caught?
45other; it depends.
If you mean "some vs. none", they are about equally important... I wouldn't want to go through life without either.
If you mean "some vs. lots" love is more important -- I'd rather have lots of love and some money than lots of money and some love.
What's better - Love or Money
46fooyun - I consider oranges better than apples, personally.
God - There's a difference between valuing something and relying on it. Still, I suspect I'm a coward by your standards -- without strong emotional connections to other people, I don't particularly consider life worthwhile.

I tend to equate money with power -- it's the stuff you use in our culture to shape your environment. It's not just a question of comfort... money means I can help support my friends, for example, or contribute to causes I value.
What's better - Love or Money
47bill - interesting... I'd say love is something to feel and something to make. What's better - Love or Money
48many of these are in my home, but not because I take them regularly Over-the-counter medicines
49my body? no.Are you craving anything right this second?
50It depends.
If the teacher is willing and able to earn respect on the students' terms, then it improves the relationship and doesn't cost respect. If not, it's best to keep the relationship formal and demand respect for your position.
Both are viable; the former is more work and may not be worth it to you as a teacher... it's a strategic decision with costs and benefits.
Do you think students should call teachers by their first names?
