Actions like bowing to the Japanese emperor or flying off to argue for the Olympics for Chicago are minor, but indicative. I suppose all the promises he made during the campaign and then didn't even try to fulfill could be taken as pandering rather than incompetence but it comes across to me more as a bit of both. And people talk about how he's so good at giving speeches but when I hear him talking, he sounds more clueless than skillful. | 45 | Certainly it would be difficult to come off as less intelligent than Bush (though I think Palin succeeds), but the impression I get is that Obama is less competent. Now I probably disagree with Obama more (say 90% instead of 80% disagreement that I had with Bush) so it's possible that affects my impressions but what I see suggests that Bush was a bit of a bull in a china shop (as you say, emotionally based reactions rather than considered) but Obama seems just clueless. Yeah, he may think about things a bit but he just doesn't seem to know what he's doing.
And then there are all the tax cheat appointments. Wow. Stunning. I'm wondering if, when all is said and done, that Obama's administration will be remembered as one of the most corrupt in recent times. | 46 | I probably shouldn't get into discussions like this since I don't pay enough attention to the guy to have good answers to completely legitimate questions like, "what would be an example of Obama not knowing what he's doing?" That's an impression formed by various things that cause me to think, "what a buffoon" and then immediately forget the details of what caused me to think that but only recall the attitude I've developed for him.
Much the same is true of the opinion that he's going to eventually be shown up as utterly corrupt. I remember there was something specific, within the first two or three months of his taking office, that caused me to have that thought. It's not a sure thing, but something happened that made me think that it wouldn't surprise me. I agree that the Cheney/Haliburton thing was probably corrupt through and through. I don't think it'll ever come out. I think the Plame thing was a scandal only in that it didn't end immediately on realizing that she wasn't an undercover agent and so the law explcitly did not apply.
