| 35 | It is a religious holiday. It started over 2000 years ago with the Pagans in Ireland. It was called Samhain (Sow-en). They believed that on this particular night, spirits (good and evil) walked the Earth. The spirits of the dead walked with the living. The Pagans had gatherings to bless the souls and thank the Gods/Goddesses for life. The left out food for the spirits to feast on. When Christianity came into being, they didn't want people to believe the old ways anymore, so they said that Paganism was Satanic and that they would go to Hell if they continued it. They tried to do away with Samhain, and had created All Saints Day on November first. This is how it became "Halloween". Hallow=Holy We'en=Eve. "Holy Eve". "Hallowe'en". Pagans soon called their Samhain "Halloween" so that they wouldn't be in trouble with the majority people, who had witchhunts.
