| 46 | I will say that I'm sure it would not be be easy for the military to make this transition. My understanding is that there is often a kind of "locker room" mentality to interactions among squads. And that mentality is part of an important bonding process that happens which builds strong trust and makes the squad effective. It's akin to hazing rituals in fraternities.
So, for example, it's likely common for soldier to call each other "jerk" or perhaps slap each other on the ass. Or brag about their sexual prowess. I'm sure most of us have seen movies where this is portrayed. Inserting an openly gay person into that mix can be challenging. There would likely be an official push to be sensitive and "politically correct", but that sort of thing would likely interfere with the critical bonding (and could result in resentment between members of the same squad, making the squad less effective and more likely that someone dies). I'm sure having women in the military raises the same kinds of issues. I think we still avoid using women in active combat positions.
