Thou shalt not enter into mortgages that thou canst afford. | Are there any commandments you think should be added to the original 10? |
| 14 | I'm in favor of compromise. I live in a rural part of New Hampshire and I think we balance things fairly well. Our town has a "town forest" which is protected and open for minimal use like hiking. We also have laws that require property in most of the town to be fairly large (5 acres, I think). Also, the state of NH has some "current use" laws that discourage development by keeping taxes lower on undeveloped land. We have some acres in current use ourselves, the woods next to our house.
I have to say that I think some of what you said in your explanation is just unfair and not in the spirit of compromise and living together with other people in harmony. Hunters are good people by and large. We get some that come by to ask if they can hunt on our property and I've talked to many of them. They are people who care about protecting natural habitats. I think it's wrong to think that hunters and environmentalists are working against each other. They have many common goals and compromise is really not that hard. We have some ATV and snowmobile trails in our area too. Also, some class-6 roads which larger off-road vehicles (e.g. Jeeps) use for recreation. There are clubs in our area for all these riders and the clubs do a lot of good community service activities. The mechanic I use is also an avid snowmobiler, he's a great guy. People like him have been living in this area for generations. We only recently moved here. They worked it all out so that the land can be used for recreation while still preserving its beauty and limiting development. I just try to follow their lead. We've tried to keep our property as we found it and open to our neighbors to use for recreation. I actually own an ATV, though I don't go trail riding with it. I use it to plow our driveway in winter and mow our big field once a year. We have some trails in the woods around our house that I try to maintain with mowing and clearing fallen trees, but I've fallen behind on that recently. Our neighbors use the trails some and I think that's great. They are respectful about it. There is some logging in our area and I know it can suck when it happens. It's loud and can tear up parts of the land. But, if it's done right, it's good for the forest. A friend of my wife is a forester and basically his job is to know the trees and guide logging to be most effective (sustainable and profitable in the long term). He's a tree expert who is great to go hiking with because he knows everything about the woods. Maybe I'm just lucky. I know there can be big problems when irresponsible people causing trouble. The place I live doesn't really have much need for development. We border on the poorest city in our state, so that probably scares away most developers. I'm sure if I had people riding loud ATVs by my house every day, I'd get pissed off. But, that hasn't happened. We do hear occasional gunshots, but they are far off in the distance. | Do you think it is just as important to have environmental protection laws for people living in the mountains or woods to where their natural habitat isn't destroyed by neighbors or government, the same as animals / plants who are endangered? |

| 16 | Oh. Heh. I took that kind of wrong. Thanks... coming from you, that means a lot. I really have very little confidence in my writing skills. So, much so that I misinterpret compliments!
The trouble with writing is that it's a lot of work and then it's hard to get other people interested in it. Well, I'm sure you know. No one wants to end up one of those sad self-published Internet "writers". I guess I haven't felt too inspired recently. Though, I did read some stuff I liked and that helps motivate me; wanting to be like that. But, it's unlikely I'm that good anyway. So, what do us regular folk do about writing; knowing it will never amount to much. Do we do if just for ourselves? Have you been writing? | Do you think it is just as important to have environmental protection laws for people living in the mountains or woods to where their natural habitat isn't destroyed by neighbors or government, the same as animals / plants who are endangered? |
| 17 | Golf kills (this was just on CSI, so it must be true), perhaps some ancient Scottish curse. As I think about this, I know I do a lot of my writing in online comments (especially here, but elsewhere and in emails too). I often spend a lot of time on it and even feel guilty about it because it's not really work now is it. Growing up Catholic, I recall going to mass and they'd usually do a reading from some non-Bible but related thing. It was often something like "A letter from Paul to the Thessalonians" and he'd go on about how awesome God was, etc. But, yeah, that dude just spit out a ton of letters and tons of people ended up reading them. So, maybe someday, people will read all my wonderful, thoughtful Internet comments and emails! I have faith in you too. I look forward to hearing about all the wonderful things you will do with your life. | Do you think it is just as important to have environmental protection laws for people living in the mountains or woods to where their natural habitat isn't destroyed by neighbors or government, the same as animals / plants who are endangered? |
| 18 | I have some investments in the stock market (index funds) which had dropped a lot, but they have recovered a fair bit.
Also, advertising revenue for my website had gone down very low for several months in 2009, but it has come back up some recently. In both cases, it's not where it was, but it's better and I'm not as screwed as I had been. | Do you think the economy is getting better? |

| 20 | crazy, I guess... I think on the surface, I might have more of a fear reaction to a non-white male. But, if I think about it a little more, it's probably more about how they are dressed, their size and the expression on their face. ...and, how many tassels their sombrero has. | You're walking along a dark street and a stranger approaches you.
