While your kid saying "Hi" is an innocent, polite thing to do, the person behind you should be thanked for telling her not to talk to strangers, as you should be doing. Oh, now I'm guilty of interfering in your parenting? Too many kids are being abducted and killed these days. Don't look down on someone giving this kind of advice. I can say though that I have experienced situations when my daughter was little with strangers making comments intended for us to hear like, "It's hot outside today. That little baby shouldn't be out in the heat." Or, when scolding the kid, "Geez, lighten up on her." That kind of commenting from strangers I don't appreciate. | What do you usually say to strangers who try to interfere in some way with you and your SO's relationship?
A person/child should have contact with the outside world. Maybe at 2 it's okay to say "Hi" to someone. In a few years when the kid isn't tied to a shopping cart it won't be. You gonna chain the kid to you in stores? I see plenty of opportunities where a stranger could snatch a kid and be gone in a flash. As you say, as they get older caution will be taught. I just can't be sure when that becomes a high priority. Conditioning and habits are things that take continous reinforcement and repetition. I'm not afraid of life, depends whether I ackowledge someone passing by on the street. Mainly they ignore me so I don't bother. When I was growing up in the 50's, I was allowed to go anywhere, do anything I wanted alone from teh age of 5. You didn't have to worry then about being abducted. Now I see that parents won't let their kids out of the yard, and either drive or walk their kids to school. Times have changed drastically, so what I'm saying is that when it comes to children, you have to view the rest of the world as potential child nappers, sexual predators and killers. Sad but true. | What do you usually say to strangers who try to interfere in some way with you and your SO's relationship?
We don't answer our telephone anymore since it's just telemarketers all the time. Our answering machine message is "We don't pick up for telemarketers, anyone else please leave a message". Blocking will soon be available specifically for telemarketing companies. | Have you ever purchased something from a telemarketer?
Interesting concept, not sure about it. Wife is absolutely a believer of reincarnation, we argue about it sometimes. I guess being an engineer I have to see things in black and white. | Have you ever been reincarnated?
I got the idea for this survey the other night while walking through Wal-Mart. They beat out most other competitors for household items, laundry detergent, cosmetics and similar stuff. Their clothes aren't great, but if I need a bunch of household stuff I'll drive the 10 miles down the highway to Wal-Mart. If I need just one or two things it isn't worth the gas. | How often do you shop at Wal-Mart?
You are right in that they don't have anyone to help you once you're past the "greeter". Worst is to try to get paint mixed. Takes 20 minutes on average to find anyone to help you. I don't buy paint there anymore. | How often do you shop at Wal-Mart?
Ha. And, if you know Wal-Mart security procedures, their security officer(s) are not allowed to accost or physically subdue a perpetrator. They could get sued otherwise. All they can do is ask the person to give up. | How often do you shop at Wal-Mart?
Exactly. I know this because I read about Wal-Mart (I call it "Wally's") being sued for a security guard grabbing and physically holding them until police arrived. My son used to work for Walgreen's. He said the same kind of thing. Stores cannot accost you, or subdue you if they 'suspect' you of shoplifting. If they do and you weren't doing anything wrong you can sue their ass off. So, all you shoplifters, don't fret so much. Just make sure you beat it out of the store before they call the cops to come. You're stuck if that happens. Oh, another tidbit of information. Wally's and other stores have all those "black balls" hanging from the ceiling to watch shoppers on video cameras. Only 1 in 5 is actually "real". The others are fake, and put up to make you feel you're being watched. I would think the real ones would be in ladies' cosmetics where teenage girls would be pocketing stuff, and maybe the electronic section. Like, who would be watching the pet food aisle to make sure you weren't snatching a can of cat food? | How often do you shop at Wal-Mart?
Ha. Never heard of anyone trying to heist a cut of meat from a grocery store. That's a good one. Only thing locked up and watched here are cigarettes. At $5.00 a pack I can see why. | How often do you shop at Wal-Mart?
I guess you gotta eat. I can see pocketing small stuff from store shelves but not actual cuts of meat. The other option is to walk through the store, eat stuff as you go, then leave. | How often do you shop at Wal-Mart?
