51This actually happened to me recently. My best friend (from the time we were 13) who lives 20 minutes away told me she and her husband planned to sell their house and move to the other side of the state, which would mean a drive of about four hours over a mountain pass. I was deeply disappointed about it, and told her I was sad about the idea of her living so far away, but I told her I certainly supported her decision if she felt that's what she wanted to do. The good news is that after a few months they decided against that plan and are fixing up the house where they live now, which means they plan to stay. * smile *

I always try to make an effort to keep in touch with friends no matter how far apart we are. I used to write lots of letters. These days it's mostly e-mail. Phone calls are nice, too.
How would you react to a friend telling you they are going to move away in a year?
52Hi Claire! Where are you moving? Are you still going to school? Everything going well, I hope? * smile * How would you react to a friend telling you they are going to move away in a year?
53Is the medical school near Sheffield? Have you decided to become a doctor, or are you still planning to do research?

I'm doing very well! I'm a happy little letter carrier in a happy little town. * smile * There are never enough hours in a day, but life is good! Ellen and I just went camping for a week and had a great time. We took our canoe out on the lake -- lovely and peaceful!

54I had a feeling you would end up being a doctor! And I didn't think one needed to go to medical school in order to do research, but I don't know. Anyway, I'm very excited for you! Are any of your friends from Oxford going to Sheffield? Are you looking forward to being closer to home again?

I don't do well without a mattress either. Luckily Ellen has a trailer and we slept in a bed! I was trying to upload a photo of our camping rig for you, but I'm running out of patience trying to figure out how to link to it ( I haven't done it for so long). I'll just e-mail it to you if you'd like. I'll wait for your okay in case photos bog things down too much and you'd rather not have it.

55Okay, now I got carried away and sent you 3 pictures. They're on the way!How would you react to a friend telling you they are going to move away in a year?
56If it's a good school then I don't see how you could think of it as a step backwards. You're fortunate that it happens to be close to home! You grew up there, didn't you? I find that family becomes more and more important as I get older. I've gotten pretty close again with my immediate family in recent years, and now I find myself reaching out to aunts & uncles. I'm really glad I have a large family and they are good people. How would you react to a friend telling you they are going to move away in a year?
57Well, that's partly the perspective, as I'm sure you realize, but it is a pretty big pickup truck! * smile * We were glad to have the power while pulling the trailer over the mountains. How would you react to a friend telling you they are going to move away in a year?

Hey, they're good enough for astronauts on a mission. (In space, or on the road!) * wink *
