| 52 | Many people who are homeless on the street, for example, are mentally ill and cannot get the help they need because the government has cut funding for them. People who regard their selfish greedy luxuries as being more important than other human beings help to perpetuate (and create) this kind of problem. You say maybe that you do not have the time or money to help someone. Maybe you are in a hurry. This is understandable. We all have times when we're caught up in our own little worlds and cannot really be of much help to others. All I am saying is that developing a callous attitude towards homeless people in general is not really reality...it is just your perception. It make people feel less guilt about not helping others if they can say, "oh, I won't give that person money because they will just use it for alcohol or drugs!" This is not always the case, but sometimes it may be true. However, to allow ourselves to judge all needy people by the same token is more a self-defensive mechanism than reality.
If you were just a cold-hearted person in general, and you did not give a toss about anyone other than yourself....than fine but at least admit it. Don't make excuses for your lack of charity by blaming the less fortunate for your own ego deficiencies. I am not saying this is you. Just a general comment. Most of us have opinions and attitudes that change over time...this is human. Just remember, no matter how good of a situation you may be in now, you could be homeless one day given the right set of circumstances. If you found yourself in this scenario would you want people to judge harshly and callously? As has been said, "do unto other as you would have done unto you." That is not true. Look around you at the wealth that some have and the lack which others have...even within industrialized countries. There is enough to go around if some would just share it. My other question to you is, since you seem to think the solution to world "over-population" is to just let some starve and die.
